Chiagoziem Nwakanma, Nick Mutuma, Bimbo Ademoye, Teni Aladese, Stan Nze, Chisom Ofor, Bukola Oladipupo, Tonia Okojie,
APART from the title’s uncanny resemblance to the best new show on American TV (This Is Us), Lowla Dee’s (creator of “Brave“) latest series “This Is It” is a show that is slowly but surely turning into a new addiction for all of us. And here’s why…
Reason #1: We’ve Got a REAL Chic in the cast!
By that, I don’t mean that she looks real (as opposed to plastic), nor am I making a comment on her beauty (which is indisputable, by the way). Instead we are making a comment on her person and her personality (the character o! The character’s personality)
In the first episode we are introduced to Dede (our lead female played by Chiagoziem Nwakanma) as Tomide’s best friend (Nick Mutuma’s character). In fact he hypes her up so much as his paddi that when he proposes to her even she’s not ready! And this is when she asserts her ‘real’ factor.
It immediately destroys the notion that all girls are counting down to their wedding day. Upon realizing that he’s proposing, Dede’s character immediately states that “she is not ready, there’s a lot of things that she still doesn’t know how to do and wants to learn before she’s married.” And then she states that she doesn’t want to mess up their (hers and Tomide’s) relationship as it is.
Gbam! There we have it. Evidence that it is not only men that can be marriage shy and all women are not milled to be marriage-thinking at all times.
Reason #2: It’s Redefining the Marriage IMAGE
So most times when we see a married couple on the screens, they seem to either be falling apart (because they think the other party is trying to redefine them) or they seem to have it all together and are well settled into their “roles”.
Right off the bat, “This Is It” dislodges that idea. When on the first day back from their honeymoon we see a Tomide splayed on the couch eating some bread concoction in the name of breakfast while Dede follows in. When she walks in, she looks like she is aware that something is “not right” with the image but she is still trying to determine what it is.

As the show goes on we watch the couple, who already have an amazing friendship, fall into their rhythm of what they want their marriage to be. They make decisions to actively keep dating and staying faithful to their “Thursday Movie Nights” while adapting to whatever new situation marriage presents.
Reason #3: KENYA is the New Ghana
Annnnddddd before you saw off my head, hear me out. I’ve recently become obsessed with this musical group from Kenya called “Sauti Sol”. Apparently, I’ve carried last in that too because whenever I look on YouTube it seems they have had ample collaborations this year with a bunch of Nigerian artists.
So maybe it is because we are in the diaspora and have less access to M-Net but the new collaborations between Kenya and Nigeria in film and music, is oddly reminiscent of when we first started off with all the Ghanaian collaborations. So just like Majid Michel and Van Vicker are not our property and Sarkodie doesn’t belong to us (but yet we’d like to claim them from now till the next seas), similarly Nick Mutuma (our lead actor of Kenyan descent) is technically not ‘yet’ our property.
But I envision a future in which we will all want to claim him (that is if we are not already there)
