Had to decide on the most diplomatic title for this because many of these movies were not really made or released initially in 2013, however, considering that most of us only saw them this year, here are the top 10 movies of 2013:
10. FAMILY MAN: I absolutely had to mention this movie and most might wonder, “what was so great about the movie?”. The movie reminded me of what Nollywood once was. The foundation of the movie at it’s core is family and the story in itself is just simply endearing. And for that, family man makes the list.
9. THE KINGDOM: Is the movie going to win an Oscar? Probably not. Will it even win an AMAA? Maybe not. But regardless of it’s obscene amount of parts “The Kingdom” was definitely an entertaining movie to watch. Effort was put in and regardless of it’s many flaws it still held attention through 6 parts.
8. MURDER AT PRIME SUITES: Murder at Prime Suites was just different. And it was very unexpectedly so. The promos were brief if any at all, and I won’t lie, going into the movie I expected to come out laughing at the shameful attempt but in the end I was rather impressed. Murder at Prime Suites is a beacon of light for Nollywood in the genre and I can’t wait to see what we do next.
7. JOURNEY TO SELF: Some hated it, some tolerated it, I say it’s just hard for most to digest the fact that there was no hair-shattering drama. A group of ladies sit around a living room and talk. Talk? What do they think this is? The Oprah Winfrey Show? Even through all that, the movie was still an enjoyable watch for those who were able to accept that it’s not your typical Nollywood movie.
6. HOODRUSH: It was daring. It was different. And yet it was the same thing. Hoodrush promised a lot and showed us a glimpse of what Nollywood could potentially offer and for this and some other reasons, Hoodrush makes the list.
5. MAAMI: Yes, I know this movie is all of 3 years old but considering that most of us only just this year got to see it, it makes the list. Ma’ami is the simple explanation as to why Tunde Kelani is neither referred to as the best cinematographer nor the most brilliant director but simply as a great story teller.
4. AWAKENING: Like it or not, you can’t deny that Awakening was definitely something. From the graphics to the story to the directing to the cast, the movie was definitely something. ‘Something’ you can’t explain to anyone else until they see it.
3. TANGO WITH ME: Finally this year, the rest of us finally got a chance to see the Mahmood Ali-Balogun block buster, “Tango With Me” and now we get what all the hype was about. Some took the opportunity to delineate flaw after flaw of this movie and I just don’t see where they had the time to even notice those flaws. For me the movie was gripping and that’s why it makes the list.
2. CONFUSION NA WA: Confusion na wa takes a regular day in Nigeria and spins it into a fantastic story that manages to touch on so many things in such little time without at any point losing focus. It’s the simplicity of the entire thing that gets you, it’s the lightheartedness with which mighty remarks are so casually made.
1. THE MEETING: And at the top of the list is the movie that we can’t seem to say enough about, “The Meeting”. For each person the appeal is different. Something for the romantics, something for the political enthusiasts, something for the comedy lovers and everyone in between.
