The purpose of this segment is to shine a light for those lesser known individuals who are doing great things for nollywood or in nollywood. We’re highlighting the bright.
Have you ever googled a movie and seen that little google information box on the right that gives you quick information about the movie, the cast, crew and similar movies? Once upon a time, not too long ago, before reviewers like nollywood forever and sites like naijarules, a google query for a nollywood movie would come up blank or nearly so.
Nollywood on the internet is barely a decade old and even at that the few movies we manage to index on google barely scratch the surface of all the movies produced.
A couple of individuals have taken it upon themselves to increase nollywood’s ‘searchability’. Now of course, this progress is not restricted only to nollywood but we’ll focus on our nollywood wiki team for the purpose of this post. There is a project on Wikipedia.org titled “Wikiproject Nigeria” that basically aims to make Nigeria and all things Nigerian more searchable and less biased.
About a year ago, you could count the amount of Nollywood movies on Wikipedia on your fingers. Why is it so important to have our movies on Wiki you might ask? I don’t know about others but personally before I start watching any movie from any movie industry – from Bollywood to Hollywood to Korean and whatever comes in between, I do a wiki search. Wikipedia, as inaccurate as it is touted to be, provides an amazing quick reference for decision making.
Two Wikipedia contributors stand out namely Darreg and Jamie Tubers. I wish I had real names for these individuals because between both of them I approximate that they put about two nollywood movies on Wikipedia a week. This might not seem like much but when you consider the work it takes to make the articles versus how many articles we had to start with, it’s a lot.
Nollywood Reinvented salutes, Darreg and Jamie Tubers for the work they are doing in helping to put nollywood on the map.
