Watch Episode ONE above.
“This Thing Called Marriage” is a series created by Blessing Egbe. For more information about the show click HERE. The series stars Ufuoma McDermott, Femi Jacobs, Tana Adelana, Jennifer John, Kiera Hewatch, Alex Adapoyi, Udoka Oyeka, Enitan Akanmi, Emeka Odogwu, and many others. The show brings up relevant issues about marriages today. In the first episode we meet two couples Edet & Julia and Dominic & Ifeyinwa.
Edet & Julia are a newly wed couple and Edet is growing increasingly upset about his wife’s busy schedule and absolute lack of time for him. Dominic on the other hand is married to a heavily pregnant Ifeyinwa who cannot seem to stop embarassing him wherever they go with her incessant spitting.
It is really hard to say that in this show there are any good characters or bad characters. What I will grant though, is that whichever character you empathize with might be an indication of your personal beliefs.
In my opinion, Edet’s character was killing all Nigerian men by making them look negative and immensely regressive. As he sat there on the couch eating biscuits and chastising his wife for not deriving joy from cleaning up his urine (I wish I made these things up), I developed a sudden desire to take those biscuits and shove them up an opening in his body that was not his mouth.
Ifeyinwa on the other hand is quite difficult to hate because she represents some women’s realities. But permit me to play devil’s advocate here as I say “haba now! Babe beht why?”. Ifeyinwa’s character was immensely tactless. This is tact! You are less. Hence, it was really difficult to not empathize with Dominic.
The show has managed to provide really strong content in the absence of any of the usual glitz and glam and color and pop. This is a good thing and a bad thing. It’s a good thing because the storyline shines forth. It is a bad thing because if there ever is a slow episode, there will be nothing to motivate us through that.
We’re looking forward to episode two but if you haven’t seen episode one, hit play above.
