When Love Happens …Again

There are chick flicks and there are chick flicks but I got to the end of this movie and really couldn’t decipher what the purpose of the movie was. However, that’s not really saying much considering that there are many movies out there (nollywood and otherwise) that are utterly senseless yet go ahead to become blockbusters (If you read that and thought of any Marvel movie then you and I can’t be friends :P). Even movies that have no purpose, arguably like a Marvel movie, still create an impact. By impact I mean, when you think about the movie you can at least remember something from it.

When Love Happens …Again is the unrelated sequel to the 2014 romantic comedy “When Love Happens”. I say ‘unrelated’ here because even though most of the character backstories are maintained, it goes on a different story path and only 3 or 4 of the original cast members are present here – and I believe we switched the male lead here as well? The story picks up with Mo who has finally found the right guy for her and their relationship is just chugging along on a bed of roses and water-lilies until she gets a big gig.

The gig is with world-renowned playboy Lade Adenuga and her role is the event planner for one of his business events holding in DC. Our boyfriend on the one hand is secure in his relationship with Mo but he is surrounded by people who keep inserting dangerous thoughts into his head and all this leads up to the moment when he does the unimaginable – he reads the comments on Bella Naija. To be fair, I guess this isn’t as bad as reading the comments on Linda Ikeji’s blog but it ignites enough fire to cause him to doubt his girlfriend.

That and a series of lack of/miscommunication leads him to empty his bank account on a trip to DC to confront his bae.

If this was a soup it wouldn’t be very rich in common sense, however, how many people are actually watching this in search of common sense? If there’s one thing the movie does right is to create the air of affluence and wealth. It takes a while to warm up to the actor who plays Lade Adenuga – the billionaire playboy. In scene one with him portraying this character, he just seems like a lanky boy trying to convince himself that everybody wants him. However, as the movie progresses he becomes a bit more believable – either that or the calibre of his cars and house convinces us.

Weruche Opia as Mo, Udoka Oyeka as Tobe, Oreka Godis, Enyinna and all the supporting cast do a fair enough job of portraying their characters as is but there’s really not much room for the possibility of failure considering how one dimensional a majority of the characters in this movie are. One of the most the exciting things cast wise was the cameo by Chief Obi.

In the end the movie is interesting to watch in that it can be simply interpreted as a bourgeois version of one of AY’s “A Trip to…” or “30 days in…” type deals. However, in the end there’s not much that is memorable about this movie and it still kinda beats me how they managed to make an entire movie out of such sparse content.
