An easy watch
Not much originality and immensely predictable
"When Love Happens” was a chic flick in it’s purest form and trying to ascribe anything more than that to it becomes shamefully forced.
Two things about this movie: 1) I really enjoyed it 2) I’ll probably never watch it again… and here’s why…
When Love Happens is the story of a 28 year old UK returnee in Lagos, Mo. Mo returned home four years ago and started working as an events planner where she is responsible for catering entirely to other people’s big days (aka weddings) meanwhile Mo on the other hand struggles with finding the one. The storyline follows her desperate search to discover what she is doing wrong and find out why everyone else is much more successful at love than she is.
So yes, it is yet another romantic comedy. Girl is single. Girl is sad. Girl wants man. Girl turns desperate. Girl meets weirdo. Seeming Mr. Right struts into her life. Turns out to be Mr. Wrong. At this moment, girl realizes that Mr. Right had been by her side the entire time.
It reads like one of the storylines from “He’s Just Not that Into You”.. or remember “13 going on 30”? Or should we just go on a Ron and Hermione type detour. Fact is, this is a romantic comedy, there are no points for originality (*looking up to my actual ratings*…ok so maybe there are a few points for originality but THERE ARE NO POINTS FOR PREDICTABILITY).
What works for this movie is the relatability, the humor, and the performances. If you’ve ever been female (and to a certain extent males too) and consider yourself reasonably successful and hardworking and still find yourself single, then this movie will have you over-nodding your head time and time again.
The lead actress Weruche Opia, who to be quite honest I’d never heard of before in my life, did a good job taking the reins on this movie and leading it from start to finish. I’m sure she’s done other work (based on the fluidity of her performance) but seeing as we’ve yet to see any of these works, we look forward to more from her. Her supporting cast was also as amazing and there were a truck load of guest appearances in this movie ranging from Wale Ojo to Bukky Wright to Blossom Chukwujekwu, Enyinna Nwigwe, KC Ejelonu and many many more in between.
So when it came to the entertainment factor it was present… but “When Love Happens” was a chic flick in it’s purest form and trying to ascribe anything more than that to it becomes shamefully forced.
If ffor instance the companiues of aan electrician are required, say
to repair a chandelier, the certified interior designer shoild source for one, hire aand then supervise hhis works while puttng in.
To add to my comments about “When Love Happens”, I just wanted to say that even though it is a simple story, that can be predictable, it is everything that happens in between that is complex, and the ways in which many of the characters relate to each other that keeps you glued to your seat. Not to mention the fact that there are so many parts of the movie that are just plain hilarious!! I might add that it is the quality of the production and acting that makes it a thumbs up.
I really wanted to go see this when it came out, but I couldn’t make it to the cinema. Been seeing it in traffic for a few weeks now- I wonder if those DVDs are legit.
Nice review. I enjoyed reading it & I think I’d enjoy the movie still. Romance movies are romance movies lol- same stories over and over. Predictable, so all I ask of the actors really is to act well.
I absolutely LOVED this movie! Yes, it was a romantic comedy, and yes it was a “chic flick” in many regards, but to me what made it a beautiful and entertaining movie to watch was the way in which the story developed, and the intensity of the character exchange, and the way in which the characters are developed. Simple, somewhat predictable, but well developed.
