The Indian-Nigerian comedy, Dilli Dark, gives insights into the themes of racism, identity, and the experiences of a Nigerian immigrant in India.
With wittily satirized colonialism, racism, demonization of foreigners and social media influence, the film director, Dibakar Das Roy switches between 1240 and 2023 to reminisce a forgotten history of Africans in India.
In the year 2023, the film revolves around a Nigerian man, Michael Okeke, studying in Delhi, who sells cocaine at night and is subjected to racial slurs and a distinct gaze owing to his skin color. Michael Okeke finds himself getting attracted to a ‘god woman’ whose ashram he joins in order to find himself. However, he soon realizes that all she wants from him is cocaine.
800 years ago, the queen of Delhi, Razia Sultan, found love in the embrace of a dark-skinned foreigner Jamal-ud-Din Yaqut. Yet the issues of the 13th century are still alive today, and the truth is that life remains extremely unfair, humans are all light and dark.
The comedy is written and directed by Dibakar Das Roy, who left a career in advertising in the USA to come back to India to tell contemporary Indian stories that are globally relevant.
Produced by Udayan Das Roy and Dibakar Das Roy, the cast features Nollywood actor, Samuel Abiola Robinson, and Bollywood actors, Geetika Vidya Ohlyan, Stutee Ghosh and Shantanu Anam.
The movie will premiere at the 31st New York African Film Festival, which will take place from May 8th to 14th.
