The Lost Heir is a “Tales by Moonlight”-feeling-epic story about a Prince who was abducted and left for dead after birth. However, many years later when his father – the king – passes, he is brought back to the fore-front and it is left to him to right the wrongs done by those before him.
Like Tales by Moonlight, it is a very self-righteous story. The type where the good guys are obvious and the bad guys are obvious and there is hardly any in between. You can tell the end from the beginning and as you watch it you are simply waiting for which “righting of wrongs” will be ‘right’ enough for the movie to end on that note.
Regardless of its errant simplicity, it is still a quick watch even though it never becomes a magnetic film to watch. It’s hard to shake off that feeling that there is not enough people in this movie to create the sort of feelings that the characters require. I would love to be happy for Salami’s character as he becomes Kabiyesi, but as only 3 or 4 people are present to hail him its hard to feel any sense of victory. I’d love to believe that Gbemi is the most beautiful girl in the village but seeing as she’s the only girl in the village that we met, it’s hard to stand firm with that argument. There’s a lot of things in this movie that would have been easier felt with a padded cast.
Salami as the Lost Heir does a decent job holding the role. There’s nothing exciting here nor anything too disappointing. As far as performances go in this film, it would be fair to say that the most exciting character (asides from Bashorun and his stereotypical antagonist ways) was Lord Frank who plays the advisor to the young king and his voice that acts as narrator.
The Lost Heir is an easy watch but also quite a forgettable one too.
