This is hands down the sweetest film I have watched. At its core it’s about family values and love, it’s not funny or even that dramatic. It’s not about royalty or politics or high class people. I will give this so much points for rewatchability and for not veering into absurdity especially considering how easy it would have been to make silly and nonsensical.
The plot is carefully constructed, into separate acts that are clearly defined and that shows that some type of thought went into it. There were genuine laugh out loud moments and every emotion that is intended is felt. It’s easy to follow and entertaining every single minute. I did not skip it at any point and was glued to it. The characters were relatable and very likeable; you actually get invested in their little stories.
Mike Ezuruonye was brilliant as always and he really brought the character to life, and he has great comedic timing. I have never seen him playing this type of role before and I think it suits him. Let’s talk about Oge Okoye, she hasn’t been starring in some very good films lately (far too much to name, Lady Gaga I’m looking at you) but this one made me fall in love with her all over again. This is the Oge Okoye we want and that she deserves, it allowed her to go back to her much better roots. Her character was great, sweet and really relatable. Frederick Leonard was quite nice to watch…and his acting was good too wink wink. I love love love Uche Elendu and she didn’t disappoint here at all. Every actor played their part well except the husbands. Their acting wasn’t bad but they just didn’t bring anything to the scene, although they are not as established as the others.
The musical score was really something else, I don’t usually notice it but here I could help but. It was very appropriate and very good at mood setting. The soundtrack was also good with lots of catchy songs.
But it’s not all rosy, there were some heavy Igbo involved in this and there are not subtitles that non-speakers could use to interpret. It isn’t that bad as one could look at the context but it definitely sullied the experience a bit. At times, the writing gets a bit clumsy and the ending for the uncle was a bit contrived and pointless but that doesn’t detract from it as well.
In conclusion, this movie is going in my top ten. The only word I can describe it as is sweet. It’s sweet and homely, maybe it might not be appropriate to use it to introduce someone to Nollywood but for us fans, it’s great.
this is an excellent movie..classic..watched it a while back..i will recommend it any day any time..100% nigerian movie! 10/10..yup. thats how much i loved it
This is a movie every Nollywood lover must watch, Mike Ezuruonye is too much oh
this movie gave me life! on different levels! watched it over 3 times and will definitely be playing it for my extended fam during thanksgiving… i think you might like angelina starring funke A. she brings a diff perspective to it. other actresses are eucharia, hilda D and Eniola Badmus.
Hallelujah we agree!! I thought this movie delivered an excellent story with great actors. It really was touching to watch a story about a young man who at all costs would defend and protect his family of three sisters, no matter how harsh he might be in the beginning. I was glad that there was no extreme satire, but comedy and drama rolled into one with a main plot and sub-plot that was believable and that would keep you glued to the screen. At some point, I did think that sub-titles might have been appropriate, as I am a non Igbo speaker, (and slowly learning pidgin), but that did not stop me from attempting to figure out what was going on. I loved, loved Mike and Frederick in their roles (I think they are both great actors), as comic relief was provided, but not to the extent of being silly. I thought that Oge, Uche, and the other women in the film playing the sisters were excellent, as their situations as brides to be brought sensitivity to the story. Regarding Oge, I recently watched “Message to Mary”, and thought she delivered equally as well in that film.
The ending to me was a testament to the foolishness the greedy uncle brought upon himself, as he ended up being rejected by the other elders. All in all, I agree with your rating. I plan to watch the film again.
