-Story: [4 out of 5] “Be Not Afraid” had an amazingly touching story. In fact, any one who watches this movie and is prone to crying at the movies will definitely shed tears.
-Originality: [2 out of 5] I have never seen Nollywood movie quite like this one before this and even after. However, with the whole car theft and baby found at the back of the car thing, I’m getting a strong “Tsotsi“(thug) vibe from this movie. Tsotsi is a 2005 South African movie.
-Predictability: [2 out of 5] Give or take
-Directing/Editing: [2 out of 5] It’s Tchidi Chikere and only once in a blue moon do I really ever have a problem with his work. All I have to say is that Rita Dominic’s character should be thankful that her car/her baby did not get stolen in America because if she were to go to the police here and tell them, “Someone stole my car with my baby inside it”. They will ask… “and where were you?” God punish her that she should reply, “I was shopping in the store” because then you sef go follow enter jail… it’s called Parental Negligence (not to mention the baby wasn’t even in a car seat. He was just laying there… at under 1o months of age? Which kain mama you come be?). My other qualm was with the lines… all of Tchidi Chikere’s lines were just corniness embodied. You watch this thing and just ask yourself “Where the heck did that come from?” and “Who says such things?”
-Acting quality: [1 out of 5] Great script. One great actress. Potentially breathtaking work gets shorthanded. I would like to say that Rita Dominic was the standout performance in this movie but I can’t because in reality, she was the only performance in this movie. Tchidi Chikere can not act, we all know this, but for some reason he is yet to realize it. He just keeps squinting that his eyes from scene to scene. Ali Nuhu was hella annoying to me in this movie. He just seemed very out of place. The role did not fit. He did not even act the role right. I felt like he was counting his words. Pat Attah… our own Nigerian Van Vicker. The boy was just on screen “doing the Van” (Define “doing the Van”: It is the technique of standing in front of the camera, as an actor, and pretending to act when in reality all you are good for is being a pretty boy). Junior was the next in closeness to an actor for me in this movie. Rita killed the acting. You could feel the emotions swell up from within her. Talent in order from greatest to least: Rita, Rita, Rita, Rita, Junior, Pat, and then the rest. And I can not complete this without mentioning that pastor… argh… the guy makes me want to beat the beejezus out of him (real name: Ifeanyi Okughalite). I thought Artus Frank and Tchidi Chikere’s speech were annoying… ha!… this guy talks like he is holding water in his mouth.
-Setting: [3 out of 5] Adequate
-Costume/Make-Up: [3 out of 5] Loved all of Rita’s outfits. Everyone else was ok.
-Props and Graphics: [2 out of 5] They should have at least put a car seat for the baby. And the dead baby prop was not convincing at all. The wrapper containing the baby was moving in too many directions that were, simply put, absolutely impossible for any vertebrate creature.
-Video Quality: [3 out of 5] Ok
-Audio Quality [2 out of 5] A bit up and down
-Soundtrack: [3 out of 5] Ok
-Musical Score: [3 out of 5] Good
