Anti-climactic ending
I saw this movie after seeing “Love Regardless“, and if there was one thing I learned from ‘Love Regardless’ it was to not disregard a movie off the bat.So even if the beginning and middle parts are torturous, persevere because it just might get better at the end.
False! I’m returning to my old ways, thank you!
House girl lover is the story of a girl who comes to the city looking for a job opportunity. She takes up residence with an old female friend who unbeknownst to her is planning on pimping her away. When she refuses this job offer, her city friend turns hostile and she is therefore forced to take up a job as a house administrator otherwise known as a house girl (because God forbid we ever call things what they are). This housegirl house administrator job is in the home of a wealthy bachelor who recently broke up with his overbearing fiancee/girlfriend/co-worker.
At this point, the stage is set. I am here thinking that there is nothing the scriptwriter could possibly do to make this go bad. There is no wrong direction. All directions the story will take from this point on will end in glory. Right? No!
Instead the end of the movie has me searching for part two, that can’t possibly be the end right? My aggravation with this movie was not because it did not end how I wanted it to or take the direction I wanted it to. Instead, my aggravation is that every part of the movie leading to the end up until the final moments (so basically the entire movie), I was holding hope that the movie would get better but it never did. So basically the entire thing was nonsense, but even worse, it was hopeful nonsense.
Besides the complete disappointment of the story itself the movie also falls short in other quarters. The audio was forever wavering in quality, the initial soundtrack seemed quite unsuited to the scenes. The light skinned lady who plays Seun’s fiancee/girlfriend/co-worker is putting in zero effort to even pretend like she knows how to act.
The strengths of this movie were Bayray McWizu and Yvonne Jegede. They performed their scenes effortlessly. Seun is a magnificent actor but for this character Mike Ezuruonye might have been a better fit. IK Ogbonna is improving as an actor little by little but we’re still waiting for more.
The movie ends with the quote “I hope you learn a thing or two from my story”. Yes, we definitely did! And the lesson I learned is to never have high expectations for a storyline just because it’s leading in a positive direction.
