How do I watch Nigerian movies online? Can I watch Nigerian movies online for free? Where do I find the latest nollywood releases? These are all legitimate questions especially considering the boom of internet streaming. However, there is not one single answer to this question.
There are multiple avenues to watch Nollywood entertainment (Nigerian movies and TV) online, some are completely free and others cost a little bit. Here are a list of the options available:
- iRokoTV – This is the most popular African entertainment streaming service. This is the one that most people know of. Irokotv.com streams newly released cinematic African movies as well as home videos. There are also older movies available on the website. Along with the streaming of movies, there are also TV shows streamed on the website. These include popular TV shows like “Lekki Wives” as well as irokotv originals. This is a MONTHLY PAID service.
2. YouTube – But before iroktotv was the good old tube. There have been Nigerian and African entertainment streaming on YouTube for many years now. TThe best part about this is that there a lot of full Nigerian movies and shows available online for free without any additional registration. The advent of irokotv led to the beginning of a cleaner and more legal presence on the site. Since then there have been the advent of channels like NollywoodPicturesTv that have select entertainment available for viewers. This is a FREE service.
3. Netflix – There was all that noise a few weeks back when Nollywood movies came on to Netflix. There are approximately 20 nollywood movies available on Netflix. There are not as many options here but the movies are there. This is a MONTHLY PAID service.
4. Amazon Video – Probably a less well known option is amazon video. There are a handful of African movies available here. They are not as many and are mainly put up on the website by the makers of the movies themselves. This is a PAY PER MOVIE service.
5. Hulu – Believe it or not, there are African movies on Hulu! There are not as many and you’d actually have to be looking to find them but they are there. For instance, the 2009 movie “Scorned” is available on Hulu. This is a FREE service w/ads, and a PAID service w/o ads.
6. Africa Magic Go – We all know of the Africa Magic channels on DSTv in Africa, well AfMagGo is an online streaming service that provides the movies and the shows online for viewers. The advantage or disadvantage of this option (depending on how you look at it) is that only Africa Magic entertainment is streamed here hence this does not include content from channels like EbonylifeTV. Also, this is the only site to access AfMag content online. This is a MONTHLY PAID service.
7. Ibaka TV – Ibaka TV is much like irokotv just with less options. They also provide movies online and sometimes this may include cinema releases. However, ibaka seems to have more home video type movies and indigenous language movies so this might be the option to go with if that appeals the most to you. They do, however, occasionally have cinema releases that are not available elsewhere online. This is a MONTHLY PAID service.
8. Reel African – There are a select number of African titles available on ReelAfrican.com. The content includes movies and television shows. However, the content is not restricted to Ghana and Nigeria alone so there are videos from other African countries. It seems as though it is basically an integration of all the African content available on Hulu. This is a FREE service.
9. Sparrow Station – If you know of Shirley Frimpong-Manso movies then you’ve seen Sparrow Productions before. The website, sparrowstation.com, streams all Sparrow Production content from movies to television and upcoming trailers. This is a PAY PER CONTENT service.
10. Desamour TV – Desamour is probably the least well known of the lot. This is a recently created platform by Yvonne Okoro where all Yvonne Okoro productions are streamed. This includes movies like Contract as well as the “Dining With…” TV series. This is a PAY PER CONTENT service.
11. Dobox – Dobox TV is a platform that houses trailers, movies and television shows. The frequency of new content is not very high, however, you can find some titles on dobox.tv that you wouldn’t be able to find elsewhere on the web.
12. EbonyLifeOn – EbonyLifeOn is the VoD platform from EbonyLife TV and houses many of the TV shows and movies produced by/for the TV station. There is an annual subscription option and a monthly subscription option available also at ebonylifeon.com. It also comes with a mobile app.
The good news is though that regardless of where you watch ’em, you can always return to NR to talk about ’em!
