Brief and to the point
Brevity and Adunni Ade's performance.
So in Love is technically supposed to be a love story about a guy who falls for the maid to his neighbors. These neighbors turn out to be three young single ladies, two of which fall head over heels for him at first sight. These two, played by Adunni Ade and Lilian Esoro, turn against themselves in the fight to obtain the ultimate prize, their neighbor (played by Brian Okwara). The third housemate, played by Mary Lazarus, finds herself in the middle of all the fiasco.
The story is quick, it’s short, it’s simple and it is to the point. This is usually a great thing and don’t get me wrong, by the time the end credits came rolling I was thrilled. Thrilled because the movie did not drag at all, it started and ended without feeling like a chore and it held my attention for most of the length.
The problem was the actual fabric of this movie. The content that makes up this 73 minutes or so of runtime. It seemed very abbreviated a story, and except for a few laughs here and there it does not touch anything within. Now this could be a good or bad thing depending on the viewer. However, one thing that’s for sure is that the movie does not do a lot to make itself very memorable.
The performances in this movie were on all points of the spectrum. On one end we have Adunni Ade and the lady that plays her PA/secretary who, in the initial parts of the movie, were together in a scene where they seemed to be competing for world’s worst actress award. At a certain point it seemed like they were not only counting the words they were saying but they were also counting the letters in each word before saying it.
On the other hand of the spectrum was Lilian and Mary who did their best to hold the movie together. Bryan Okwara was easy to watch but was also nothing spectacular, performance-wise. Belinda seemed to have many moments of over-performing in this movie. There were too many scenes where her character would go from 0 to 110 within the blink of an eye and you find yourself telling her to please calm down through the screen.
So in Love is a light romance. It’s funny in some scenes and engaging in all. However, it doesn’t touch much else.
