When it gets good, it's different
The first 50 or so minutes
The movie, Mr. & Mrs. Onoja, is…. DIFFERENT!
From the title I did not know what to expect but I can tell you that I did not expect it to be this. The first 50 minutes of the movie seemed like soft porn and I could not imagine that the movie was headed anywhere other than possibly the next degree of pornography after Tonto Dikeh’s initial stint.
It’s difficult to construct a synopsis for this movie because much of the appeal of this movie (said appeal takes at least 50 minutes to show face) arises from the surprise factor. From the “welp… I definitely didn’t see that bit coming” aspect. All we can say is that in this movie, Blossom plays a rich cassanova with no regard for women or their feelings until he meets Belinda and tries same on her.
Blossom does well in this movie as Mr. Onoja however the standout performance is Belinda’s especially due to the nature of her character. Belinda does the crazy rejected lover well and she brings enough conviction to her character for the movie to move along.
Recently in nollywood we’ve had a few of these “crazy” roles such as Ivie Okujaye in “Heroes & Villains“, Venita Akpofure in “While You Slept“, and Mercy Johnson in “Thy Will Be Done” and many of these actors have done it well. Now, however, we are waiting to see that one actor that takes this role and doesn’t only do it well enough but manages to take it to the next level where the crazy character is intrinsically frightening even to the viewers watching. We’re looking for that actor that makes us pee our pants from fear.
The movie itself does take a while to build up. It took me nearly a week to find motivation to watch up to that 50 minute mark but after that the movie does go by much smoother because that’s when the storyline finally comes out. The story is a bit reminiscent of an old Mercy Johnson/Van Vicker movie (or was it Ramsey Nouah…. or Pat Attah?) but it’s still original in its own right.
What gets me though is the end of the movie. The blackmail bit. I am still yet to understand what happened there. What was the blackmail about? How did this happen? Is the confusion part of the appeal? Are grown men allowed to eat cheerios?
