The Washerman is a confused supposed love story between a well-to-do vlogger who is unlucky in love and her infatuated, stammerer washerman. The Washerman, played by IK Ogbonna, breaks up with his long time live-in girlfriend and finds himself ‘in love’ with his pretty madam. Why? Because why not. He then proceeds to tell her about his love for her. Why? Why not. She is initially repulsed by the idea. But *SPOILER ALERT*, after her multiple attempts at finding someone classier and wealthier who also loves her, she decides to settle for fall in love with said washerman. Roll end credits.
Speaking of the end credits, if you start watching this movie and wonder which is the best part or the best part for you to start watching from then fast-forward to the end credits. It features a fun wedding scene and the magical singing of everyone’s favorite gentleman, Ric Hassani. Something else you might want to consider doing is just watching the music video for the song on YouTube and skipping the movie in its entirety.
Written and produced by Etinosa Idemudia, The Washerman is yet another romantic comedy that nollywood neither needed nor wanted. At the end, the poorly written story and the incomplete characterizations neither gave us a love story that tugs at our hearts nor a comedy that elicits more than a smile. It was a wonder during most of the movie why IK Ogbonna’s character needed to add on ‘stammerer’ to his towering list of disadvantages. The stammering aspect only served to make the overly prolonged scenes even more dragged and to make an unamusing character even more frustrating to watch. Etinosa Idemudia as our lead female was again in what we have come to characterize as the ‘usual Etinosa character’ who is simply pretty, wears nice clothes and attempts to be funny occasionally. It was uninspiring.
The experience of watching The Washerman was both amusing and sad. It was amusing that this movie actually showed at the cinemas and sad to think that some unfortunate few actually shelled out money to see it.
