Rift is another one of those nollywood ‘homey’ movies that could quite frankly be indistinguishable from the next/last one, and is only made easier to sit through because of the players involved.
In Rift, a happy couple starts to fall apart when the husband – played by Kenneth Okolie – changes his behavior towards his wife and becomes more distant. The wife, played by Enado Odigie, suspects that he is cheating on her and tries repeatedly to get him to change his ways. Soon enough she gives up her attempts and allows the distance to form between two of them, and as the distance increases another man enters the picture.
A quick way to loose all your money here would be to offer money to anyone who can guess how this one ends – because it is obvious. So obviously, the charm here is not the originality. The story itself starts off decently strong with the pull of the happy and loving family but soon enough, even those lovely visuals aren’t enough to keep the audience seated. For the duration of this movie, the biggest pull really is the charm that is Enado. There is something about her love affair with the camera that is able to captivate you throughout a film while she is on screen. You can argue that the experience of watching this movie, if her role was played by many other actresses, would have been very different and a whole lot less tolerable.
Having said that, the movie itself is a simplistic effort. It has many of the usual eyebrow raising moments, like the scenes where Enado is in bed with a full face of makeup, or the inconsistent audio, or the inadequately lit scenes here and there. At best, Rift is a decent time pass. It’s not anything you’ll be thinking of in days to come talk less of months to come.
