A Lot Like Love tells the story of Fanaa (Rahama Sadau), the rich daughter of a forex business mogul, who is married to Abdul (Ibrahim Suleiman). Abdul comes from humble beginnings but he makes up for it by loving Fanaa intensely. Everything is going great in their life until Abdul gets kidnapped on their way to their anniversary trip.
Watching A Lot Like Love is truly an exercise in patience. If somehow you manage to make it past the first twenty minutes, you deserve an award. It is a truly painstaking venture to make it from start to finish of this movie especially when the ending is so apparent from the beginning. It is clear to anyone with a half functioning brain who is responsible for the kidnap. Why? Because this is a storyline that nollywood of old has explored till its death. Speaking of nollywood of old, what was that kidnapping scene really? The whole “action” sequence was borderline laughable. JT Tom West and Saint Obi of old had more impressive action shots in the 2000s.
There are plenty moments in the plot that are severely questionable. Like why doesn’t the security guard/police officer nab the kidnapper who approaches Sophie’s characters husband at the ‘bank/office’? The plot of this film is dragged, the world building is non-existent, and 95% of the film is told in flashbacks that no one actually cares about. The writing is truly a top contender for the most vacuous we have seen from nollywood in a while. It is only saved by a few decent performers aka Gabriel Afolayan in the few scenes he is in.
The movie starts off warning you that this is going to be a drag and it truly lives up to its expectation. The most exciting thing about this movie as we get towards the last quarter and realize that the film will finally end any moment from now.
Ahhh that film was far from perfect. It’s unfair that people can say that.
Please no, it has small potential, but the same potential was lost at the end of the movie. This movie ended like they were rushing them to act it.
– The plot twist was twisting itself
– The movie ended with more gaps than entertainment.
– The character development was non-existent.
– The acting was flat, sincerely manageable was Gabriel Afo.
– The story was so annoying and not plausible.
– The VFX, ohh God.
– The Hausa accent was so annoying.
We should never be disingenuous to ourselves to say it was the perfect Nollywood movie,
In the same year with a host of better movies.
Beyond the Viel, which focuses on the north was way better
