“Hijack ’93: The MAD Men & the Aircraft” is a recounting of the real-life events that occurred during the October 1993 plane hijack, carried out by four Nigerian teenagers affiliated with the Movement for the Actualization of Democracy (MAD).
Their objective was to hijack the aircraft traveling from Lagos to Abuja, as a response to their discontent with the annulment of the presidential election that year, which was meant to lead Nigeria back to full democratic civilian rule.
The hijackers demanded the restoration of MKO Abiola’s mandate. Subsequently, the boys were apprehended and imprisoned after a three-day period of unsuccessful negotiations, and they eventually regained their freedom in 2001.
“Hijack ’93” is a collaborative project involving Play Network Studios, led by Charles Okpaleke, and Native Media TV, along with the participation of UK-based filmmaker Femi Oyeniran and support from the UK Government Department of International Trade (DIT). Co-producers mentioned in the project include Rogers Ofime and Agozie, while the director’s seat is occupied by Robert O. Peters. The movie features Jemima Osunde, Idia Aisien, Ego Nwosu, John Dumelo, Yakubu Muhammed, Efa Iwara, Nancy Isime, Sharon Ooja, Sani Muazu, Adam Garba, Allison Emmanuel, Oluwaseyi Akinola, and Nnamdi Agbo.
