As the curtain falls on another eventful year, Nollywood lovers can rejoice in the anticipation of a cinematic extravaganza this December.
As usual, the Nigerian film industry, known for its dynamic storytelling and vibrant characters, is set to deliver a captivating array of cinematic experiences to usher in the holiday season.
In this article, we highlight five films which are poised to leave an indelible mark on the hearts of audiences. From dramas that unravel the complexities of human relationships to comedies that promise laughter-filled escapades, this December promises a diverse tapestry of narratives. Here you go:
A Tribe Called Judah
Funke Akindele, the reigning queen of the box office, is poised to uphold her December tradition of releasing films that consistently shatter records. Following the successes of “Omo Ghetto: The Saga” and “Battle on Buka Streets,” Akindele is gearing up for yet another star-studded December release, titled “A Tribe Called Judah.”
In this film, Akindele once again steps into the director’s chair to narrate the compelling story of a mother and her sons. When the mother falls gravely ill, the boys hatch a daring plan to save her – by robbing a mall. However, their audacious scheme takes an unexpected turn when they cross paths with genuine armed robbers during their mall escapade.
The stellar cast includes Funke Akindele herself, along with Pere, Tobi Makinde, Timini Egbuson, Olumide Oworu, and other talented actors.
This movie is set to hit the cinemas on December 15, promising an exhilarating blend of drama and comedy.
Malaika
Much like Akindele, Toyin Abraham keeps her fans satiated with a cinematic work as the year concludes. This time, Abraham presents “Malaika,” a film that has her fans buzzing with anticipation.
Directed by Steve Sodiya, “Malaika” tells the story of a woman grappling with infertility in her marriage, embarking on a spiritual quest to unearth a solution. The stellar cast of “Malaika” features Toyin Abraham in a leading role, alongside Odunlade Adekola, Taiwo Ajai-Lycett, and Emeka Ike, among other notable talents.
Set to grace the cinemas on December 22, “Malaika” is one the few movies Nollywood lovers are looking forward to seeing.
Afamefuna: A Nwa-Boi Story
Popular Nollywood director, Kayode Kasum, adds his touch to the array of December releases in the Nollywood landscape. Notably, Kasum has been inclined towards crafting intimate family stories in recent projects. Following the unique exploration of family dynamics through the lens of the musical genre in “Obara’m,” Kasum ventures into the Igbo apprenticeship system with his latest creation, “Afamefuna: A Nwa-Boi Story.” In this new movie, the director delves deep into how the Igbo apprenticeship tradition plays a pivotal role in the accumulation of wealth.
The cast of “Afamefuna” boasts stellar names, including Kanayo O. Kanayo, Segun Arinze, Paul Nnadiekwe, and Noble Igwe, among other accomplished actors.
Having garnered positive reviews at the recently concluded AFRIFF, the film is set to captivate audiences when it hits the cinemas on December 1.
Ada omo Daddy
Co-directed by Akay Mason and the seasoned Yoruba movie director Adebayo Tijani, this film represents the first production by Mercy Aigbe to grace the big screen.
Aigbe, the producer, envisions the movie as a harmonious blend of cultures, transcending our differences. Positioned as a captivating family-oriented drama, the film promises a generous dose of comedy interwoven with valuable life lessons.
The cast includes Sola Sobowale, Fred Amata, Dele Odule, Carol King, and Omowunmi Dada, among other talented actors.
“Ada Omo Daddy” is scheduled for release on December 15.
Breath of Life
Following the successes of his faith-based film “God’s Calling,” BB Sasore embarks on another inspirational journey with the compelling story titled “Breath of Life.”
This film unfolds the story of a man of God who, after losing everything, becomes a mere shadow of his former self. However, a chance encounter with a young man alters the trajectory of his life. Similar to Kasum’s “Afamefuna,” Sasore’s “Breath of Life” premiered to acclaim at the recently-concluded Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF).
The film boasts a stellar cast, including Wale Ojo, Eku Edewor, Genoveva Umeh, Chimezie Imo, and other accomplished actors.
“Breath of Life” is set to reach the general public on December 15. It will be available for viewing on Prime Video.
