The Edo State International Film Festival announced the selection of 486 films for its highly anticipated second edition scheduled to take place in Benin City from November 30th to December 2nd, 2023.
Over 3000 filmmakers’ submissions were made to the festival from more than 80 countries. Continuing the triumph of the inaugural event in 2022, the upcoming ESIFF assures an even more dynamic commemoration of varied voices and stories with the global film community this year.
The Film Festival Director, Violet Okosun conveyed her enthusiasm for the forthcoming occasion, “ESIFF continues to be a beacon for filmmakers globally, and this years’ selection of 486 films from over 80 countries underscores the festival’s commitment to showcasing the diverse tapestry of global cinema. We are thrilled to provide a platform that not only celebrates outstanding films but also fosters a dynamic exchange of ideas and skills within the industry.”
In addition to ESIFF 2023, a well-rounded program awaits with master classes and panel sessions designed to enhance the experience for both emerging and seasoned industry professionals. Anticipate expert-led sessions covering Cinematography, Screenwriting, the Business of Acting, Documentary Filmmaking, among other valuable topics.
The panel sessions will feature key government stakeholders, including Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, and Edo State Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism, Uyi Odua Malaka. Prominent film executives such as the founder/CEO of Rok studis, Mary Njoku, Chairman of Genesis Group, Nnaeto Orazulike and the Managing Director of Kada Cinemas, Trevor Pillay, will also contribute their insights, making ESIFF 2023 a focal point for film enthusiasts, with diverse perspectives enriching the event. Governor Godwin Obaseki has passionately endorsed the festival, underscoring the state’s dedication to fostering a thriving film industry. Emphasizing the pivotal role of infrastructure development and talent cultivation, the governor’s vision propels Edo State towards prominence in the global film arena, making ESIFF a testament to this commitment.
“The strategy is to make sure we develop Edo as a hub for production by making it easy for producers to come and work there – make it more convenient and cost-effective. What do you need as a producer? You need talent and to be able to manage your costs.” Governor Obaseki said.
A significant stride in Edo State’s dedication to the film sector, ESIFF 2023 has garnered submissions from 80 nations, solidifying its global standing. Impressive entries hail from Nigeria, Iran, India, The United States and Brazil.
The upcoming ESIFF 2023 assures an exciting experience, fueled by the Victor Uwaifo creative hub. This convergence will unite filmmakers, industry experts, and cinephiles worldwide. ESIFF remains a dynamic platform, not just for showcasing outstanding films but also for nurturing local talent, empowering them to thrive on the global stage.
With the Edo State Government as the host, GIZ as the sponsor, and Kada Cinema and Azura Edo as the partners, the ambassador as Ibrahim Suleiman; The festival begins at 9:00am till 7:40pm which will premiere thirty-six short films. The short film titled Things We Do When Nothing Happens premieres at 9:00am will be the first. Other short films will play at their allocated runtime, ending with Voyage Home at 7:40pm.
Three panel sessions will be held on the 1st and 2nd December respectively;
A Panel session on, “Aggregation of Film and Culture: Edo State As A Case Study” will be held on the 1st of December by seven valued panelists; Ukinebo Dare (Anchor, Head Ecosystem Building and Industry Engagement, Education and Transitions Mastercard Foundation), Gov. Godwin Obaseki (Executive Governor of Edo State), Tobias Wolfgarten (Head of Programme, Skills Development for Youth Employment[SKYE]), Olubukunola Oloyede (Sony Country Manager – Marketing & Partner Relations Nigeria), Alhaji Adedayo Thomas (DG Censors Board), Edu Okeke (MD Azura Edo) and Johannes Lehne (German Deputy Head of Mission)
A Panel session on, “Business of Film: Cinema As A Commercial Window For Film Marketing” will also be held on the 1st of December which will host seven respected panelists; Victor Sanchez Aghahowa (Anchor, Head Productions, Multichoice West Africa), Mary Njoku (Founder/CEO ROK Studios), Nnaeto Orazulike (Chairman/CEO Genesis Group), Trevor Pillay (MD Kada Cinema), Uyi Odua Malaka (Honourable Commissioner Arts, Culture & Tourism), Peddie Okao (CEO Prolens Movies Limited) and Kene Mkparu (President/CEO KOMWORLD Cinemas)
The final Panel session on, “Edo State And The Edo Film Project: Using ESIFF As A Springboard For Development” will be held on 2nd December which will be hosted by seven esteemed panelists; Ukinebo Dare (Anchor), Victor Sanchez Aghahowa (Head Productions, Multichoice West Africa), Aigbeze Uhimwen (Senior Project Assistant, IOM), Kabat Esosa Egbon (Edo Film Project), Dr. Victor Okhai (National President, Directors Guild of Nigeria), Mark Szilagyl (Film Akademie) and Uche Agbo (Chairman Nigerian Film Festival Association)
