It has been a crazy year and it has been a scary year but this is every year. For nollywood as a whole we have seen a lot of changes, some positive and some not so positive. We have seen a lot of growth and sometimes we have seen a lot of counter growth. There have been many suggestions around this time of year about things that we can do to get better and that’s all well and good but at the end of the day we cannot deny that even though we are not where we want to be, we are also not where we used to be.
Our Favorite Things that Happened in 2016
There were quite a few things that happened this year and it will be hard to list them all off the top of our heads so inevitably some will be left out but these are the few that come to mind the most immediately:
- The growth of the cinema culture
- The growth of online distribution and availability
- Our new website look
- The renewed interest in theater
- TIFF 2016
- More single part movies
Our Least Favorite Things that Happened in 2016
Where does one even start from. There were many things that we didn’t exactly love that continued from previous years, for instance, I actually saw a poster for a nollywood movie called “The Walking Dead”. My dear, I taya. However, there were a few things that proliferated this year that weren’t necessarily the stuff of dreams such as:
- The business of HYPE cinemas
- This is when you hear so much about a movie and you just naturally assume that the movie is going to be great but then you see it and the let down is made even worse because of the hype. Too many of our movies this year mastered that art of releasing numbers or constantly bombarding us with news of the movie, yet the movies themselves were not worth the film strips they are recorded on.
- Formulaic movies
- Another thing we seem to have mastered is “the formula of what makes a good movie”. Great camera, check. Famous cast, check. Costumes on point, check. Social media publicity, check. But where is the content though?
Beyond all of these, the good the bad and the ugly, we went through 2016 with the NR family and there were ups and downs but our favorite moments are when we get the emails or read the comments and recognize names that have followed us for this entire journey.
On January 22nd (in less than one month), NR will be turning 5 years old. That’s crazy! It will essentially be the beginning of our 6th year reviewing movies. To think that some of you have all been here this entire time keeps us awe struck so we would like to take this opportunity to thank you.
Thank you for this year and for sticking around for so long. To say thank you we will be giving out ONE FREE MONTH subscription to irokotv to one of our dedicated readers.
