You Me Maybe

You Me Maybe is a simple kind of movie…. but maybe it was too simple.

In this film, a young lady undergoes surgery to remove fibroids and in the process has to loose one ovary. With a reduced chance at conceiving, her parents would like for her to take the issue of finding a husband seriously. She meets a guy and they fall for each other but afterwards she finds out that the already reduced chances might be even more reduced now. She is left to make a decision about what she wants to do and what direction she wants her life to take.

The movie is 59 minutes long (not sure what kind of film that classifies as) but it is important to remember this because it affects every part of the movie. Possibly the best part of the movie is the chemistry between Ade Laoye and Demola Adedoyin – our leads. Their chemistry is cute and enigmatic but we only get a little bit of it before the story has to move on (because as earlier mentioned, it is only 59 minutes long). Our first impression of Demola is how strikingly similar he looks to O.C. Ukeje. These two are not our usual irokotv crew (apparently, they are the African Magic crew with each of these actors starring on different series on the TV station), however, they never leave any room for the audience to wonder about their skills. Their talent speaks for itself as they fluidly move from scene to scene and embody all that is required of their characters.

It can be argued that the movie is unrealistic especially in our society but no two realities are exactly the same. The length of this movie also forces it to simply hit on the important things and include only relevant scenes. However, regardless of the brevity, the flow of the movie is still organic and the point comes across without seeming too staggered – I guess we can call that the Lowladee effect.

Despite this though, the film never overcomes that feeling of overly simplified and brief. We jump from her relationship with Jide to her relationship with Michael and then wedding planning in little to no time. It would have been very easy for the audience to skip over Michael’s entire existence if not for the character’s comic relief tendencies. This was the brilliance of the writing. Just when the storyline was speeding towards its happily ever after and loosing all sense of reality, the comedy was inserted in to alleviate the questionable nature of the happenings on screen.

You Me Maybe is a cute and sweet story and the production does well too. I couldn’t necessarily understand why there were random grayscale cuts in the film when the camera switched angles here and there, because it didn’t seem to add anything to the storyline. Unrealistic as it may have been, it was still simple and entertaining.
