Q: Post white waters in 2007, it seemed as though you dropped out of the movie scene for a while. Then fastforward to 2013 and all of a sudden O.C. Ukeje is everywhere. So what changed between now and then? What was that interval for? And if you had to, what would you point to as the spark that initiated this O.C. Ukeje boom?
Lol! Me dear, I didn’t drop off the scene on purpose. I was looking for work. Desperately too, but not too desperate to do silly films just to be popular.
So I did, maybe 2 or 3 films between 07-09. And I was thinking seriously about if it was the thing I wanted to do for the rest of my life. So after meetings with Egbons, I decided I’d act as a career, but start lookign outside Nigeria.
So I decided to go to NYFA (New York Film Academy) and when I got back, people started offering me work.
But I’ll be honest with you, I can’t tell you it’s any special thing I’ve done so far I just know I made a decision to be a serious actor, to look outside our constantly depressing industry, keep my mind international and the rest just happened.
I really think God is using me as an example to change up some notions of our business and to start a change and I’m only too glad to be a tool.
