Leila Djansi
Teaches a morale
Not a fan of Ama K's acting here
-Story: [4 out of 5] Once in a while you get a good movie: two parts, incredibly star-studded cast, interesting and entertaining storyline, all the works of an accredited film. But once in a blue moon you get a Leila Djansi movie. With Leila Djansi movies the cast can be anybody from somebody to nobody, it might not be amusing but it will definitely be enlightening, heartfelt and educating. Personally, I didn’t read the synopsis of this movie before watching. I had seen the trailer earlier but I wasn’t paying attention so I had no clue where the story was going. But it was great!
-Originality: [3 out of 5] To state it simply, I was pleasantly shocked with the difference of the story.
-Predictability: [4 out of 5] From the beginning, I honestly couldn’t predict a thing. This isn’t a regular African movie, it’s a great movie by world standards.
-Directing/Editing: [5 out of 5] Breathtaking! The cinematography above all was breathtaking. The attention to detail and motions was breathtaking. The motions in this movie was simply… (can you guess?) breathtaking.
-Acting Quality: [4 out of 5] Woohoo! I started this movie and all I could think was, “Isn’t that the Nigerian guy from Phat Girlz”, dayum. But onto important matters, I was happy to see Yemi Blaq: love the way he talks and love the way he acts. Doris Sackitey was amazing and I spotted Chris Attoh sitting at the dining table, I’m not sure he had any lines but seeing him was… (not breathtaking, lol) but great. Now Ama K. Ama K is a good actress. She can execute her roles and she can recite the lines. She is good at acting… but….But this is a GREAT movie! Don’t stone me but I just believed her acting wasn’t good enough for lead role material. Yes! She got stronger in the end but in the beginning I was like “Who the heck is this girl?” (and not just me cos I watched this movie with the family).
-Settings and Costumes: [4 out of 5] The person responsible for making Ama K. look so ugly deserves an award. Can you compare the person on the screen with the picture on the top left? The scar on Jimmy was top notch, (it wasn’t breathtaking but it was ugly and that was what it was supposed to be). Great job with costume and setting and make up.
-Video and Audio Quality [4 out of 5] On point
-Soundtrack [4 out of 5] The soundtrack really only came on at the end (that I noticed) and it was great. Since it was at the end it really wasn’t possible for it to do anything wrong. It can’t give anything away cos the movie is already over. The only thing it can do is be terrible, and yet it wasn’t. On another note, … the musical score was breathtaking!

Yemi Blaq is soooooooo sexy! I just melt when he opens his mouth. Where did he learn to talk like that? He’s a great actor too.
i really don’t think it is fair to judge a movie based on its originality given the fact that in today’s film making, all storys have been told, there is practically no new story to be told(unless in the case of a new event, for example the 9/11 terrorist attack, even then there have been other terrorist attacks but the only difference with 9/11 is that it was on a larger scale and a different strategy), the only thing filmmakers can do is to tell the same story from a different perspective in much the same way as christopher nolan’s movie incpetion was told from a different perspective based on the same idea already explored in “dark city” and “the matrix”,now would it be fair if u were to review it and knock off points from it simply because it wasn’t original, it is a general consensus that while it wasn’t very original, it was told from a different point of view by nolan which makes it stand out on its own(and it is even seen as somewhat original with the way nolan executed it from his own point of view), all in all i don’t think it would be fair to knock off points from a movie simply because it wasn’t original, because practically all storys have been told before and if a filmmaker does a good job at telling a good story from their own perspective, then why fault them.
Of all the categories I have on NR! I’d have to say that ORIGINALITY was literally a must for me.
It really doesn’t matter if it is fresh off the docks or recycled a million times over. I don’t review on extremes. Other things are taken into consideration (like if spice was added) and a viable middle ground is arrived at.
It’s impossible for me to not have originality as a criteria because the first thing a non-nolly fan tells you about Nollywood movies is that “ALL THEIR MOVIES ARE PREDICTABLE AND THE SAME”. Hence, in order to make it easier for them, I tell you ahead of time.. “it’s like something you’ve seen before” “it’s like this this or that” “it’s nothing like anything you’ve seen before” or “it’s like a mix of this and that”
while i respect ur opinion and reason to include originality in ur reviews, i still think it isn’t fair on movies and filmmakers as a whole.I can understand where u are coming from and the perfect explanation to this would be in regards to nollywood where movie ideas are recycled over and over again without exploring new avenues and ideas, now haven said all that, can i ask u a question, how would u review nollywood movies 60 to 70 years from now(i pray u live that long my dear), by then a new generation of filmmakers will crop in and explore all the areas most of the present ones aren’t exploring, and guess what, practically all stories would have been explored by then and the only thing that will be left to do is recycle which is synanimous with hollywood today, all stories told in hollywood are recycled, the only difference that stands each filmmaker out is how well the work with these recycled stories, to be more specific, what i am trying to say is that i can understand that as it is now the originality section of ur review might be valid, but will it be valid years from now when all that will be left is stories to be recycled just as it is in hollywood.Predictablity has nothing to do with originality, a movie can be unoriginal and still be unpredictable, a perfect example of this would be “inception”. Sinking sands and private storm were based on the same concept of domestic voilence but what sets them apart is the different perspective or point of view they were delivered.
flint o abeg I no fit read all that but when we get to that bridge we’ll cross it. God that saw me this far wil see me through that. And as the years increase, I assume my OCD/perfectionist attitude will also increase but time will tell. Check back in 60 years lol
lol my dear, i know u will live that long.
I saw the movie over New Year and I loved it too. Thanks for that link.
A 9.75/10 coming from you? I definitely have to watch this movie. I don’t think I have every seen a Leila Djansi movie before but with all the details you mentioned, I have added her name to the list of Producers / Directors to look out for.
I also want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in advance. Cheers!
P.S. Simplicity is underrated … I concur!
Already on my way to rent it from Amazon.
Yippee! It’s on Amazon! More producers and Directors should toe that line for us not in Africa. I love Leila’s works, though I’ve only seen the trailers. Now with this review, I can’t wait to see this. And it’s just $1.99! Good one Leila!
Hahah! Honestly, I think I was more excited about the price than the movie, lol
