Runtime, some performances and weak production.
Two initial appeals of this movie, Enyinna Nwigwe (I hear you judging me… imma need you to STOP lol) and the initial “old nollywood” feeling it gave in the beginning. All that was before I was hit with the inexplicable 2 hour and 51 minutes 3 hour runtime. I mean… you might as well be a 2 part movie at this point. PSA: Don’t think you’re doing us any favors, a one part movie that is longer than 2 hours is as bad as a multi-part film.
My Angel is the story of a young man who comes across a waitress in a local restaurant/upgraded mama put (it’s all about perspective) and falls for her. The young man, played by Enyinna, is in a rough place in his life (and so is she, technically. I mean the girl is working at a mama put for Pete’s sake but ok o), he is currently squating in his friend’s apartment that is paid for by the friend’s girlfriend.
The waitress, played by Esther, promises to help him out as much as she can (from the money that she has saved from her mama put waiting job???) and says she sees a bright future for him. And then she utters a line that lets us all know that it’s going to be a long movie, she says “even if I die, I’ll come back as an angel and make you rich”. Great! Just great! It doesn’t take an oracle to know at this point what’s going to happen next. But if you’ve still managed to make it this far without knowing then not only do I want to achieve your level of naivete but also please enjoy the rest of the movie.
Ok! So thus far it might seem like this is a bad movie and that’s not true. It’s not. It’s just not as good as it could be. The joy of seeing Enyinna initially was wiped off when it began to appear like he wasn’t really trying in many of the scenes. At many points it did feel like the actor was dragging his body from scene to scene and counting down to his paycheck (*oh she’s dead now. What? You need me to be sad? “Oh nooo! Don’t die. You can’t die. I’ll save you. I’ll take you to the hospital”). No further comments.
The story in itself was alright considering that the first part supposedly showed the development of a love story that I don’t remember seeing develop (the next thing I knew someone was pledging to be a wealth-distributing angel, abeg where can I get one of those too), and the second half was an immensely obvious ghost story.
Make of it what you will. “My Angel” was all in all, an alright watch.
