Chinelo (Ebube Nwagbo an orphan who lives with a caring uncle and his insecure wife finally gets admission into the university. She is highly intelligent, yet extremely shy. On her first day on campus, she is advised by the registrar to keep up the good work and not follow bad company because the last time they saw anyone as smart as her, Chinedu (Mike Ezuruonye), he ended up becoming a cultist. Chinedu, alias G-Lord, is the roughest criminal on campus. He is responsible for more deaths than one can count yet he has the face of a harmless child. Chinelo ends up becoming friends with Amaka (Nuella Njubigbo) who unknown to her is the sister to Chinedu. Alfred (Jim Iyke), the son of the commissioner and an ardent failure notices Chinelo's intelligence and is attracted to her. Meanwhile, alongside Chinelo's friendship with Amaka comes increased interactions with Nedu so much so that Nedu's girlfriend feels threatened and promises to make life hell for Chinelo. Between Alfred's love, her 'aunty's' problems, the dangers of Chinedu, and the pressures mounted upon her by the registrar, what will become of Chinelo in this university? -Story: [4 out of 5] I remember seeing this movie sometime back around 2007/8 and I remember at that time, I was so motivated to stop my university education in the United States and just relocate to Nigeria just so I could pretend to be a gooody-two-shoes and then have a cultist fall head over heels in love with me. I was on a long thing back then. Ofcourse, that didn’t happen… (the relocating part, I mean!)
-Originality: [0 out of 5] No! This movie is in no way original, it is a story we’ve probably scene millions of times in every work of life from books to cartoons to series to movies. Yet! I loved it… 🙂
-Predictability: [0 out of 5] Many things in the movie are a given, however, depending on the person, the last part might not be set in stone.
-Directing/Editing: [3 out of 5] For a 2007 movie, it was quite impressive. No overly prolonged scenes. Adequate character development. Adequate time spent on each issue. Gets straight to the story without time wasting. I was not a fan of the voice overs (my problem was not with their existence but with their tone), yet! I still commend the directing.
-Acting quality: [1 out of 5] The standout performance for me was defiitely Nuella Njubigbo (on left). The irony of the situation was that even though Nuella was supporting and Ebube was lead, her acting was still much stronger than that of Ebube. I fell in love with Mike all over in this movie, not for his acting skills (although unquestionable) but for much more selfish reasons (i.e the role he plays). I love Jim in this movie because… well… tell me if I’m wrong but I believe Jim Iyke is way more appealing when he is not playing a thug as is evidenced in “Before God and Man“. Browny Igboegwu! Haha, this movie was the beginnings of the afro man, I can tell because he is still as skinny as Majid was in his first few movies. Extras were horrid and this movie was filled with them. However, the supplementary characters (uncles, aunts, random recurring friends) were not that terrible but can not be called actors.
-Setting: [3 out of 5] Appropriate, not outstanding
-Costume/Make-Up: [3 out of 5] Good
-Props and Graphics: [3 out of 5] Ok
-Video Quality: [2 out of 5] that which is to be expected of a 2007 movie.
-Audio Quality [2 out of 5] Keep your hands on the voice controler
-Soundtrack: [3 out of 5] The first soundtrack was actually pretty amazing, and then came the second which even though it wasn’t horrid, it was still not as good as the first.
-Musical Score: [4 out of 5] Great
