Alexx kept me going.
There was no purpose to the movie.
If you prepare a certain recipe over and over again, no matter how terrible you were initially, I find it difficult to believe that your final product after numerous attempts can manage to be as bad as or even worse than the initial product. So imagine what it must feel like for me watching Rukky Sanda productions.
Gold Digging is about a girl searching for her dream man. According to her, all she has ever known was wealth and men who take care of their women. Therefore, she finds it hard to even comprehend working for a living. For her, her dream man must be a celebrity and must be rich.
The performances in this movie for the most part – exempting only one – was nothing to write home about. Nobody was exerting any kind of effort to even look like they were pretending to act. I argue that this is because quite frankly there is hardly anything to act – how does one infuse mind into a mindless matter. The story has no coordination if you can even call it a story, the end is brainless and completely unrealistic that even I who finds a way to excuse everything can’t excuse this. If a romance was supposed to be in this movie somewhere then I missed that signal… and possibly every other signal in the movie. Half of me expected the movie to end half way through because someone on set must by then have realized that this was going nowhere.
The movie stars Rukky Sanda, as does every other Rukky Sanda movie, but the surprise here is the co-star – Yvonne Nelson. Not that Yvonne Nelson is the most sought after actress or one of beyond impeccable taste in script or incredibly unmatched talent or anything like that. However, seeing Rukky Sanda movie just seems like a new ‘low’. And this isn’t even one of Rukky’s better movies – then arises the question of which of Ms. Sanda’s movies is a ‘better’ movie – but some actually have a storyline, this one doesn’t. In many-a-scene, you sit there and wonder “there is no way that Yvonne is not mentally asking herself how she got herself into this right now”.
The movie also stars Alexx Ekubo and for the first time ever I was elated to see him on screen. Alexx was honestly the single interesting or nearly entertaining factor of this movie. And this is not just because of the character he played, but the fact that he actually tried in this movie – something that almost every other actor in this movie seemed not to be doing – made him worth watching and his scenes worth looking forward to.
If there’s anyway to summarize the experience of watching this movie it’s with this: after less than five minutes of the movie I knew how the movie was going to end, and half way through the movie I still didn’t understand why anyone thought the movie was worth making.
chei! 4%?! NR is not smiling….
I totally agree. You cannot imagine how I felt after spending money to watch this movie. I am all for us to support Nollywood and encourage people but please people need to call a spade a spade and not an ‘agricultural tool’. So far, all the film critics (including myself) have all echoed the same sentiments. From your site, it seems that Keeping My Man is the half eyed King in the land of the blind. Now…that being said…I think this movie is not alone…Honeymoon Hotel…I can’t wait to see your review..I saw it tonight and it reminded me of this movie although in a different way.
Lol, I can’t even imagine spending money on a Rukky Sanda movie so I feel your pain lol.
I’m definitely not looking forward to Honeymoon Hotel especially because I became such a huge Dandala fan after “The Contract” that seeing him in something terrible so soon would crush my heart.
Thanks for your comment on my site…here is the longer review of Gold Diggin http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/an-offering-so-mediocre-/172182/ Don’t worry…Dandala doesn’t disappoint…not that it is his choice though…dude barely spends 2 minutes in the whole movie…so that begs the question…why is he featured prominently on the cover hahahaha…I saw that in the cinema and the guys behind me kept making comments about how they wanted their money back…and how they couldn’t tell the day from the night…I laughed more from the commentary than the film…Looking forward to reading your review of Brother’s Keeper…
Oh that just made me really happy to know that he’s not really IN the movie – and there goes any inkling of desire I even had to see the movie in the first place. Why is he featured prominently? Marketing lol.
I’m also looking forward to seeing Brother’s Keeper. I hope it’s as good as I what I imagine in my head but I’ll keep my expectations asides to avoid disappointment.
