With a trailer and name that is targeted to impress, Jamestown certainly aims to make an impact. For those into action movies, this might be the one for you.
On paper this has a compelling plot. Full of intrigue and mystery the story is suspenseful and engaging however it doesn’t start out that way. The introduction is cheesy and amateurish, and it takes a while to get into it. In fact the first few minutes make it very hard to continue. The story wanders a bit and really loses focus of the main plot. Yet once you have made it pass thirty minutes a mixture of curiosity and endurance will carry you on pass the four parts of the movie. The story does create this world of Jamestown masterfully and really does immerse you in its day to day life.
Acting wise, it was a mixed bag. Sometimes it is convincing on the part of veteran Yvonne Jegede and Patience Ozokwor. In my opinion Patience Ozokwor doesn’t get enough credit about her range of acting of acting, she can go from playing a big madam to a ghetto queen flawlessly. Gbenga Richards switched from good to flat with little warning. I found Benjamin Nwodo very entertaining both he was dressed as a woman and for his acting. Queeneth Hilbert was good on screen, not great because there is room for improvement
The costume and wardrobe department was either crazy or genius. I still have trouble deciding. The costumes were inventive and out of the world, they paid close attention to detail which really contributed to creating the world of Jamestown. It really gave it character and identity. The special effects especially that of the guns was unimpressive but the bomb one was okay. The soundtrack was really catchy and nice to the ear. Although I really dislike the use of dubbing, when it wasn’t echoing to give the impression it was recorded in a bathroom, it took the viewer out of the film itself.
In conclusion it is hard to recommend this movie but if you really persevere then it might be an enjoyable experience. Once again this movie would have really benefited against serious cuts, to keep it in check. A hack job would really improve the overall quality of this film.
