The year 2014 is quickly coming to an end, who would have thunk it? (I sabi speak English, free me). So we are starting our countdown with our top five TV shows of 2014.
One of the biggest things this past year has been television and the new media (aka YouTube). Some of our favorites from previous years continued this year and some new shows surfaced. So here’s our top five television shows of 2014.
#5 – Lekki Wives
In our number 5 spot is Lekki Wives which returned earlier this year with a new season and the addition of Joselyn Dumas to the cast. Lekki Wives also made its premier to iRoko Tv this year making it easier for all of us in the diaspora to keep up with the show.
Synopsis: They move up the ladder in leaps to keep the meal on the table. They hop on and off countless beds and enjoy the upside of being trophy wives, they experience the price of change but have no clue what the end holds.
#4 – Festac Town
This year, iroko tv joined the tv making business with Festac Town – a show that has been catching a lot of buzz year round. And why not? With a cast including Oge Okoye and Blossom Chukwujekwu amongst some of the already well known faces of nollywood.
Synopsis: The secret lives of the upper, middle, and lower class living in Festac. Their fears, tears, pains and victories.
#3 – An African City
An African City came to us this year and reignited that love and joy we all remember from Shirley Frimpong-Manso’s “Adam’s Apples“. It came and ended all too soon but the good news is that we have word that they are currently working on or in the process of shooting for a brand new season. As a side note though, we hope they take a cue from Gidi Up and make this season longer and with more episodes.
Synopsis: An African City tells the story of five beautiful and successful women who confide in one another about their love-live (or lack thereof) and find new ways to deal with being a 21st century woman in Africa.
#2 – Tinsel
America has “Days of our lives” and Africa has Tinsel. Possibly the longest running tv show of our time with the most loyal audience base. Tinsel has a solid star base and keeps bringing more and more actors into the limelight. Year after year, Tinsel manages to hold the audience.
Synopsis: Fred Ade-Williams, the enigmatic founder of Nigeria’s biggest independent film company, is drawn into a battle of wills with daring newcomer Brenda “Nana” Mensah. Shot on location in Lagos, set in the glittering and dynamic world of film production, Nigeria’s Tinsel marries all the elements of drama, intrigue, romance, deception and triumph.
#1 – Gidi Up
Gidi Up is our number one show because this year it came back with a bang. It has a beautiful cast and an obviously keen crew. It is available and accessible to both those at home and the rest of us in the diaspora. The drama is engaging from the get go and the entire thing is just very exciting.
Synopsis: Gidi Up is a thrilling adventure centered around the lives of four friends in pursuit of happiness, success and independence. However, a few wrong choices quickly turn their Lagos dreams into a Gidi nightmare.
