The storyline
Preachy, audio, some not strong enough performances
Miss Teacher follows the life of, Nwanne, a pregnant secondary school teacher, fondly called “Miss Teacher” by everyone around her. Regardless of the struggles of her own life, she tries to do everything within her power to secure a better future for all of her students.
The movie follows her story telling us how she got to where she is, it also follows the life of three of her students as she attempts to save them from making wrong decisions in life. Somewhere along the line she meets Jude, played by Joseph Benjamin, an engineer sent by a charity organization to build a playground for the school and we all know what happens after that.
The movie, by its very nature, is very preachy. Most of the storylines did come off more as preachy than as a story. It also didn’t help that Chika Ike as the lead actress wasn’t able to elevate the movie beyond “listen to what I am saying” and into “feel what I am feeling”. Regardless of this though, the story still manages to get its point across.
The movie had some really strong actors from Liz Benson to Joseph Benjamin who both held their own. However, the one actor who stood out the most was the young man that played “Chidi”. Setting aside his uncanny resemblance to Yul Edochie for a minute, the boy brought a certain degree of passion to his performance that is not usual for a newcomer.
Besides the storyline and the performances the movie also had some weaknesses in production. The audio, for one, needed better coordination. It had moments when it peaked and other moments when it declined. The music as well needed to be woven more seamlessly into the movie, and the continuity also seemed choppy.
The movie, Miss Teacher, had its pitfalls but in the end the movie was still very efficient in relaying its message and keeping the audience in their seats.
