What better way to bring in the new year than with this news of last years numbers. In the year 2016, Nollywood is estimated to have grossed a grand total of 1 BILLION NAIRA at the cinemas.
It all began in January 2016 with the spill over success of Fifty from the end of the previous year. The EbonyLife TV movie, produced by Mo Abudu, was followed by other box office successes such as Omoni Oboli’s “Wives on Strike” and then to Kunle Afolayan’s “The CEO” and AY Makun’s “A Trip to Jamaica”.
These great records which were astounding in and of themselves were taken to a whole new level when ELFIKE collective released the movie “The Wedding Party“. With the biggest opening weekend in nollywood till date, and what could possibly be touted as the best word of mouth for a nollywood cinema movie in many years, “The Wedding Party” enjoyed days and days of sold-out theatre halls which has led to its amazing numbers.
The following is the box office returns from Nollywood in the year 2016:
- The Wedding Party – FilmOne Nollywood – N203 million
