There’s the saying that when you get married in an African home, you don’t only marry your spouse but you also marry their family. This movie gives it another dimension: the family (which consists of 2/3rd non-blood relations) tries to determine who their guy settles down with.
In “You, Me & The Guys”, a young man, played by Seun Akindele, dates and leaves various ladies because each one was incompatible with his friends/roommates/family. He finally meets the lady that appears to be the right one, played by Linda Ejiofor, and everything is going well until the roommates get antsy that things might be going a little too well.
It’s an interesting formula and might have been a bit more relatable if the family consisted of ‘children’ instead of grown and lazy adults but the grown and lazy adults give it it’s comedic appeal. Speaking of comedy, if there’s one thing that is the most annoying is the use (or should I say lack of use) of Jude Orhorha in this movie. There was so much comedic potential that was left untapped, instead we just had him sit in a corner and eat meal after meal after meal.
Seun Akindele does a good job with this character especially in the meeting scene between his character and Linda Ejiofor. They both embrace the light comedy feel of the movie, and ‘light comedy’ is exactly what this movie is. Any attempt to go into this looking for sense is a waste of your time. The movie shows up, presents its highly unusual set, delivers some jokes and then exits.
It’s a fun watch in the time it lasts. It probably had a lot more potential but it works for what it is – light comedy that you laugh at and proceed to forget almost immediately.
