The Friend Zone

Alright, we don’t need a telescope to see this one coming but I will still narrate for the sake of fulfilling all righteousness.

In The Friend Zone, we have two best friends (a male and female played by Daniel Lloyd and Chelsea Eze). Male best friend has a work crush, played by Onyi Alex, who rejects him and places him solidly in the friend zone. Distressed, our male best friend reaches out to female bestie for help. Female bestie begins to give him notes on how to successfully woo over his crush. It works. Yes! But that’s not the only thing that happens.

Any one want to take a wild guess at what else happened here? Anyone…?

So obviously the charm of this movie is neither originality or predictability. However, this is not the thing that brings the quality down completely. What brings it down is the absolute lack of reason in some scenes?

So I get that we are trying to make a fellow coworker jealous, but how can you be at work smooching in the conference rooms, giggling in front of the office door, and even touching each other in the middle of a departmental meeting? Even if the company you worked for was a producer of pornography, this is simply not acceptable work behavior. But it kept happening, not just in one scene or two but repeatedly in front of their superiors and said superiors say nothing about it. Are you kidding me?

If you can get past this ridiculousness and the absolute lack of anything substantial in this movie the next thing that hits you are the performances. Our leads constantly teeter between actual performances and confusing me about what they’re actually doing on screen and then there are our supporting actors. Ebube and Onyi still both have a hard time becoming a character and it doesn’t help elevate the quality of the movie.

If you make it to the end of friend zone, hats off to you but me thinks there are better ways to squander 90 minutes of one’s life.
