Last night, after many many months of waiting to hear about its return and after many many days of recoiling in memory of Mide’s words from the season’s trailer, Skinny Girl in Transit came back to our screens.
It returned on Friday, November 9, with a live broadcast on YouTube paired with a very active live chat section. Even though this was a first for the series, that was not the initial most exciting thing about the first episode. The most surprising and exciting thing about for most who are used to the 11-20ish minute runtime is the new 43 minute length for S5E1. There’s still no word on whether this is going to become a norm for the season but I know that I, like many other SGIT and Tiwa-Mide fans (or is it ‘TIDE’ now?), would not mind that length at all.
Even at double its usual run-time, Skinny Girl did not skip a beat in getting right into the action. When we left off, Mide had proposed to Tiwa and our favorite internet couple were finally going to be getting their happily ever after (or so it seemed). This season opens up with our favorite Nigerian conversation of all time (if the success of TWP and Isoken is anything to note) – Weddings! We see an unrelenting Mummy Tiwa alongside the cunning Shalewa trying to convince Tiwa of what her wedding colors should be. And as divisive and enigmatic as the choice between Holy Ghost Orange + Red aso-ebi vs Monochrome Black and white aso-ebi is, that was not to be the focus of the entire episode.

One thing this season seems to be hinting at is full on character developments which has us all excited. We are arriving at this assumption based on the time they are giving to characters who otherwise had little to no screen time or screen purpose. In this first episode we already see our favorite Wosi in a form that we have never seen her before with two potential suitors. She even gets scenes on her own outside the house and we get a little bit of a sneak peek at the fashion demon encouraging her clown-like makeup tendencies.
Then there is Derin. Our favorite television sister – said no one ever – but one who we can all agree that we hate to love, is back this season. Played by Beverly Naya, it seems she is not sticking to the nicer version that we got a hint of at the end of season 4 but instead the spicy, fiery Derin is back and she is taking no prisoners. One pure indication of this is in her encounter and subsequent shut-down of our favorite Kenyan Chocolate – Nick Mutuma. Yes, that’s right! If you somehow managed to miss him in the trailer then let me be the first to tell you that Tomide of “This Is It” is now in “Skinny Girl” as well. In his entrance scene, he bumps into Derin on the staircase while sporting that 2002-Nelly-In-Dilemma-Type stud earring, all ready to melt our hearts away. As Vice President of the Nigerian chapter of the Mutuma fan girl association (yaas, das right! Argue with your forefathers), I do not take kindly to her attitude towards our choco-milo but we take heart in realizing that there’s probably a love story in store for us as the season goes on. And if it goes really well, then maybe a spin off? *wink* (sorry Dede, I swear I still love you).
And that’s not even half the gist!
The major drama this episode was from Tiwa who somehow managed to loose an entire mortgage of a ring – before she even got a chance to post it on instagram and tension the world. She spends most of the episode looking for it and being terse about this until she finds out that it was all part of someone’s plot. Speaking of someone, let’s talk about our Nigerian Idris Elba (no be me dash am title o). Prior to SGIT, I thought it was just the Ayoola effect. You know… that ability to make nuns reconsider their decision with his words alone. But after seeing our darling Ayoola in some other works and web-series in the interim, we’ve come to realize that the real reason we love Mide is a combo of Ayoola plus beautiful writing and directing. And in this episode Mide is coming for our hearts ladies!

And then there was Shalewa. Somehow somehow – probably thanks to all of our fervent prayers – Mohammed still hasn’t broken things off completely with Shalewa. In this episode we see Mo having a tense conversation with someone from his family over the phone. At the end of the conversation, Shalewa suggests that he should give them what they want so he can rest, and he retorts “trust me, you don’t want that”. Ghen! Ghen!! It’s about that time! Over the episodes with Mo, we’d forgotten what we knew – that Mo is a Northern boy. What does that mean? I am not trying to jump into any conclusions here but let me quickly conclude that it is kinda absolutely looking like Mummy & Daddy Mo are planning an arranged marriage between him and Sophie Alakija’s character (whom we saw in the trailer). Remember her? The one spilling that ‘love grows’ nonsense.
With all this and more we are beyond excited for the next episode and to watch and see how things pan out with: wedding preparations, Derin and Hot-Chocolate-Kenyan Nick Mutuma’s character, Wosilat and her jamb scores or Wosilat and her suitors, Didi and her new dating scene, Mo and Shalewa, and ohhhh…. what’s all this talk about being a gentleman?
