Poor audio and did not reach full potential
It’s a genre we don’t see very often. But even rarer than that, it’s a genre that’s not done well very often.
The Antique is a story set in the late 19th century and tells the story of a young girl’s adventure into the forbidden land of spirits after she is hand chosen by the gods to recover a sacred antique. If you remember an old NTA movie called “The Pot of Life” you will quickly notice the similarities. But if not, the Antique is very similar to that egg-of-life genre of film.
The movie has a solid base of renowned actors ranging from Bimbo Akintola to Olu Jacobs and Funsho Adeolu. It also has some of our modern day favorites such as Gabriel Afolayan, Kiki Omeili and Seun Akindele. However, none of these were the central acts in this movie and they all didn’t have enough scenes that their performances would make or break the film.
The lead character in the movie was played by a newcomer, Oge Indiana. Now, in such a pivotal role amongst so many seasoned actors, any comma in her performance is highlighted. Thankfully Indiana was not awful to watch, in fact she was a bit reminiscent of Damilola Adegbite. However, as earlier mentioned, the strong actors did not have too many roles and they were so strong that whenever a non-seasoned actor came on to the screen their performances seemed mechanical.
As an adventure the movie is honestly a tad underwhelming. In the scene where an old witch appears and is supposed to be scary, the alterations to her voice turn out to be more hilarious than anything else. If any one thing was done exceedingly well in this movie it was the music because without it the adventure is a joke, the freight is absolutely lacking and the effects would be average.
Asides from the music, one great aspect of the movie is the casting of Kiki Omeili as the villain. She is so well suited to this role that it is hard to reconcile her with her any of her previous nicer characters.
Regardless, the antique is an enjoyable movie. The storyline might not have reached full potential but it was still very enjoyable as what it was. Asides from the poor audio, it’s an entertaining watch.
