The sequel to dirty diamond is called “Heart of a twins”. Nope, that’s not a typo it’s Heart of a Twins. At first I thought “No! Maybe they made a mistake on the cover” but No! the movie actually continues with this title: HEART OF A TWINS.
Going by that alone you know what you can expect from the movie. Dirty Diamond is a story about two sets of twins from two different families. One of each twin is the good child and the other is the bad child and both twins are family friends. It follows the lives of these twins through university and their travails in the real world, juxtaposing the trials of the good twins versus the escapades of the bad.
So at first we have, what I think to be, a series of unrealistically fixed events. What are the odds that two family friends would both have twins? What are the odds that both twins will be identical? What are the odds that there will be a bad egg in both families? What are the odds that the bad ones will choose each other as friends? What are the odds, what are the odds.
But whatever the odds maybe, let’s imagine we accept this entire story and then deal with what happens afterwards. The movie follows the perfect sequence of ‘moral’ stories. Not that there’s anything wrong with moral stories but the ones of these kind, you’d have to agree, have been overly explored in Nollywood. And we’re not the only ones noticing it. Times Magazine describes Nollywood as follows:
The teeming Nigerian cinema grinds out some 2,500 movies a year, mostly direct-to-DVD quickies mixing melodrama, music and an evangelical Christian spin. (Think Bollywood via Tyler Perry.)

As I said on twitter, I don’t know whether to be insulted by this or take it as a complement but whatever the case may be one cannot deny that we’ve had way too many of these movies and it’s time to get a move on.
I can argue that the only shred of originality in this movie is the aspect of double twins. As single twins are no longer original since Dangerous Twins, and quadruplets have already been taken by Ini Edo in Unforeseen, this was the next logical step in the twin phenomena lol.
I must say though that I loved the chemistry between Mercy Johnson and Funke Akindele in this movie, no they were not gay (it’s not only lovers that have chemistry o) but they merged very well and the sisterly friendship was definitely felt through and through. Loved Mercy Johnson’s performance in this movie, both as the bad twin and as the good twin. They were both distinct in their characterization and didn’t overlap. Funke Akindele was also great as the ‘good twin’, I was not a big fan of her as the bad twin as that’s what I’m used to seeing her as.
All other supporting actors did fair enough jobs, some of the extras were horrendous and asides from the near-absolute lack of originality and the entire predictability of the whole shindig, Dirty Diamond is a fair enough film to watch, if you have absolutely no other options that is.
They already have a movie with quadruplets? Wow! LOL…
I think the writer nailed it for Time in that description of Nollywood. If only there was more diversity because nothing wrong with Bollywood, which I love, nor TP who is OK.
Haha yes o… Ini played the quadruplets role in unforeseen… nothing way we no go see for here lol
And I agree, I couldn’t feel insulted though cos I’m a huge fan of both Bollywood and Tyler Perry
