There is this trope in western movies and other media called Women in the Fridge, it refers to a plot that sacrifices women and children left and right to bring about a change in a man’s attitude. This is not a good or bad thing; it is neutral and is certainly present here.
The plot had a strong opening, the usual poverty and suffering thing which was brought brilliantly to life by the talented Yul Edochie. The basis of the story is original and interesting to see. It is able to build really tense and heart racing moments and it really draws you into the story. The characters are relatable, and more importantly interesting to watch. So what is the problem? It goes on for far too long; it becomes needlessly complicated and keeps going pass the point. There was no need for two parts, but while it dragged the story to death it didn’t drag or get bored. It just got too complex. It was very good at tugging at your heart strings, and very good at evoking the emotion it wanted to. Personally I dislike the –spoiler alert- death of Yul Edochie’s wife and the quick marriage of her sister, it felt like a shift in focus from the family to just Yul Edochie. In these films the happy ending is that the family as a whole suffer toil and trouble and part of the happy ending is that they are together. Of course that is a personal thing and has no bearing on the story itself.
I started respecting Yul Edochie as an actor when he played a man paralysed from the neck down and killed in that role. This may have surpassed that. He gives a passionate and nuanced performance here. Angela Okorie was good and Clem Ohamaze was playing his usual game. The chemistry between Rita Edochie and Yul Edochie was dynamic but then what would you expect? Overall the acting was good.
Commendations really need to go to the crew of this movie especially those in charge of the props and effects. Expert use of discretion shots and they were very aware of their limits and came up with creative methods to still serve up a quality film. However at one point, the production dipped and the filmography was not up to standard. You could practically see the film rolling. The soundtrack was very good, it has catchy, well produced songs.
In conclusion I would recommend this film because of its acting and its story. Personal feelings aside. By the way the portrayal of grief in this movie was top notch in its diversity, not as much screaming and wailing.
