One Night Stand
Juliet Ibrahim, Bryan Okwara, Zika Nwobodo, Andreblaze Henshaw
2014
You know that friend that you have, the one that makes a big deal of nothing, the drama queen. That’s exactly what this film is. A big boring up do over a very little matter with uninspired characters and an unfortunate dub.
The story itself, I’m sure was ‘borrowed’ from some Hollywood film or the other except this is a very poor copy and paste job. It follows a man who has a one night stand, finds out that the woman doesn’t take contraception without prompting, follows her about to her ex-boyfriends, to her family’s house then his girlfriend returns… It’s a bit of a fuss over nothing. The story is dull and moves slowly, it involves characters that are not particularly relevant to the main storyline with no discernible reason why, characters that then drop out limply and are never heard of again. The main characters themselves have no characters; there is nothing about them that is interesting and nothing about them that makes you want to continue watching. It has a run time of about an hour but still tries to cram it up, it truly explains why something can be both short and boring.
The acting did not help. Juliet Ibrahim, while a long time Nollywood actress, was just so lacklustre in this. She didn’t try; at times her expression did not even fit the situation. It was just like this movie, dull and boring. Bryan Okwara can only be termed as an aspiring actor, he wasn’t that good when he started but is genuinely getting better. No actor could have saved this though, a stronger attempt would have still been crippled by the dubbing. Dubbing straight up doesn’t work, actors are unable express themselves as much, it doesn’t sync up as much as it should and it generally removes the atmosphere of the film. It takes a very very good film with extremely talented actors to overcome dubbing however this was not it. In any shape or form.
The soundtrack was spectacular. The music was extremely nice so if anything, watch this film for the music. From intro to club to end, the music was miles above the film.
In conclusion, I can take a bad movie and I can take a stupid movie but a boring Nollywood film is the worst of them all. We can do better than this; it has superb production values but nothing else. BTW You just had a one night stand and it’s contraceptives that are against your religion?
