Seeing Olu Jacobs and Joke Silva as a couple in a movie again
The music and seeming lack of direction
We’ve seen a couple of rape movies from nollywood over the years, and many even in the past year (like “2 Broken“, “Distance Between“, “Code of Silence“, “Lost Pride” and many many more). We’re not trying to take away from the relevance of the subject when we say that at this point we should be able to fine tune the presentation of these movies.
One Fine Day is the story of a family and how they are adjusting to a daughter who seems unable to overcome a rape incident that happened to her about a year ago. Her father and sister, played by Olu Jacobs and Funke Akindele, are over it and think that she should be over it as well. They find it difficult to understand her outbursts after so much time has passed.
The rape victim in this movie is played by Bimbo Peters. For me, she was a relatively new face; even though she does a fair enough job, her performance was not enough to elevate the script from a place where we ‘see’ your troubles to a place where we ‘feel’ your troubles.
If there’s one thing the movie does do successfully is show two different types of crazy. I’m not if this was done intentionally but in the juxtaposition of the victim vs. the perpetrator, we see two mentally unstable individuals handling it in two different ways. Whilst the victim is unable to move on with her life, the perpetrator is just going around ‘business as usual’. But they still manage to show that he is mentally deranged because of how he reacts to her, the victim.
The music in this movie was also something that got me. It just seemed to be moving from one pace to the other without any prior warning. Music for this movie was done by Nathaniel who does music for many of the Royal Arts Academy productions. However, it almost seems like his work is better in the light comedy, easy pace type of movies as opposed to these heavier types. I felt like having Erowele or Bernie Anti do the music would have been more appropriate for this movie.
At the least, the music would have then been able to elevate the movie to a point of emotional significance.
Before the end of this movie you really can’t tell what the makers are trying to achieve with this. Is it just a drama? Are you trying to send a message? Are you trying to make an appeal? With all this director panning faces, is it a thriller? Make up your mind and shoot accordingly.
Yeah it is indeed a rip off. They copied the exact same story line. Yemi Blaq was the rapist. Chioma was the elder sister, Ini the younger, Tuvi James as the younger sister’s boyfriend and Justus Esiri as their dad. The whole suicide attempt and odd behaviour was the same.
Dis movie is a copy of d movie trumatized starring chioma akpotha, ini edo, desmond and late justice esiri, almost exactly same storyline
Wow! Thank you for letting us know. I don’t think we’d have thought about that if you didn’t mention it 👍
