It feels empty
How is it possible for a movie to have a storyline and still feel like it has no storyline?
Before we digress, let’s establish what this storyline is. A young widow and her son move in to their new home and not too long after her son begins to see a ghost. It is the ghost of a little girl who only appears to him. She starts to talk to him and tells him her story. She tells him about how she died and who is responsible and how she feels the need to warn her mother.
The few exciting things about this movie is #1) Seeing Rita Nzelu again and #2…. the fact that number one was all there was.
As far as performances go, it seemed like Ruth was carrying the entire operation. Nzelu interrupted brief moments of almost acting with numerous moments of over acting. Then there is the young boy who also acted alongside Ini Edo in “Reconciliation” and was tedious to watch in that movie as well. The little boy is not the worst actor, however, he gives off an air of someone who is reciting lines as opposed to having it flow naturally. It seems the casting director did a perfect job of finding his exact female match because the actress who plays Mimi, the little ghost, was equally as bad.
It’s hard to place a finger on what went wrong for this movie. This is because it is a cohesive whole with a clear beginning, middle and end. It is just that it is not a beginning, middle, or end that moves you to remember the movie or even manages to convince you to keep watching the movie. It was not like other movies where you can almost tell that the storyline was better on paper. No! This one had a definite air of consistency. I have zero doubts that it possibly felt this empty even in ink. The performances just don’t do enough to elevate to a level where it is a memorable movie.
At best, the entire movie just comes off as another episode of tales by moonlights (and not the type that you premiere the season with).
