Black Men Rock is another couple’s vacation storyline. It follows three sisters and their husbands as they go on a ‘family’ vacation for a week during which they all reveal each other’s secrets and come to terms with their demons. Does this remind you of “Why Did I Get Married?” or “Couple of Days” or “Hire A Man“? Well this is because save for a few technicalities there’s not much difference between this and any of those.
The couples in this movie are played by John Dumelo (as the embarrassing and jobless husband) with Ruth Kadiri (as the wife who will never let him forget it), Tamara Eteimo (as the wife of a rich man who appears to have other interests) with Toosweet Annan (as our two-timing husband), and Bolanle Ninalowo (as the husband with a verbal diarrhea condition) and Nneka Adams (as the wife who bares the brunt of it).
The movie lasts approximately 2hrs and 20 minutes and the time is barely felt even though you could argue that there really was no reason for the movie to be this long. The length is alleviated by the pretty locations, the beautiful characters and the comedy of John Dumelo’s character. Asides from being the jobless one of the lot, Dumelo’s character is also the comic relief as he seems to accept the insults poured on him and become exactly what is expected of him. Initially he is hilarious but as the movie moves on it starts to feel tedious but thankfully towards the end of the film his character takes on a more serious tone.
Black Men Rock is a simple and light film with a storyline that could have been shorter and directing that could have been done better. Regardless of this though, it is still a light fun watch but unfortunately one that you will probably forget soon enough.
