In “Entangled” a sister runs away from her family to live with her friend in Lagos after she almost ruins her own sister’s wedding by publicly declaring her feelings for her soon-to-be brother in law who rejects her in return. In Lagos, she turns into everyone’s favorite habitual romance/love hater until she bumps into a dream man.
If you rolled your eyes once while reading that synopsis please say “aye”! If you rolled it more than once while reading the synopsis then let’s figure out a time and place to meet for our selfie because that really was the extent of the ludicrousness here. It is one thing to make an overt love story that abides every single trope in the romantic universe – from characters, to scenes, to lines and down to mannerisms – but it’s another thing to make it without any care about the emotions behind it. So on one hand you have the most cliched development of events ever, and on the other hand you have cliched score music, hurried scenes, and scene cuts that don’t even allow time for the emotions to land.
Then there were our actors. The leads in this movie were Ini Dima-Okojie and Mawuli Gavor, and I don’t know if it’s because the characters they play barely had any character themselves but for some reason these two were overwhelmingly underwhelming. Ironically, the two most fascinating characters in this movie – played by Sika Osei and Efa Iwara – were carted off the screen before they could attempt to save this work.
But it’s not all dark clouds over here, I’m sure some deep romantic person can find a way to aww and gufaww through this film so much so that they miss its many inept characteristics – like lack of originality, complete predictability and poor characterization. So if that deep romanticism abides in you then this movie stands a chance with you.
