In When Love Calls, a young Mena (Munachisom Eke) goes to wake up her dad on father’s day only to discover that he has had a heart attack. Two years later, Mena and her mother, Ronke (Uche Montana) are still recovering from the shock and loss, however, since the incident Mena has been unable to speak. Eventually, the charming and relentless Kene (Uzor Arukwe) comes into their life and begins to bring in light into an otherwise blindingly dark tunnel.
Uche Montana gets a lot of credit for being a stunning woman. And rightfully so! However, she does not get as much credit as she deserves for her acting prowess. Uche is a natural in front of the camera, not only does the camera love her but her fluidity on screen causes you to miss her in scenes without her because not many are able to pull off such ease. Uzor Arukwe is the king of ease and fast becoming the king of romance too.
The pairing of Uche and Uzor is quite honestly the engine that drives this story forward. The chemistry between the two and the effortlessness with which each actor feeds off the energy of the other and responds to each other is truly natural. So even if you are not a hopeless romantic, When Love Calls is worth watching just to see both of these actors together on screen. If you are a romantic though, then I dare all the butterflies in your stomach not to riot in that one scene where he says to her, “with me you don’t ever have to fake anything”.
The storyline behind When Love Calls is a bit different in that it attempts to touch on the psychological impact of loss on the young child. Even though that is barely glossed over and used as a moving force for the storyline. It could obviously have been explored more wisely, however, as you already know, my standards for YouTube movies is “bad as e bad, make e no too bad”. And When Love Calls is actually not a bad story it just does not provide much depth and revelation, it provides a love story. This love story progresses ahead at a descent pace and is truly constructed for the romantics at heart.
The production and direction also work well together here to present the heart of the story. Towards the end, the writers throw in a wedge in the storyline that does feel a bit unnatural and like an obvious after thought because none of the events prior alluded to this. Despite that and the resolution thereof, When Love Calls is still a sweet little love story that is worth the watch.
