Familiar Strangers
John Dumelo, Luckie Lawson, Nana Ama McBrown, Prince David Osei, Roselyn Ngissah
Roselyn Ngissah: "If wishes were horses, beggers would play polo"
Me: "Uhm.... ok?"
The movie Familiar Strangers only has two parts (in retrospect, I'm just realizing how smart the movie title is. You won't get it until after you must have completed the movie)
Pascal Amanfo
Luckie Lawson
-Story: [3 out of 5] Stories about couples trying to get a baby need to ‘hurry up’ (in Ghanaian accent) and expire already. I mean, these stories have been granted the spotlight in African cinema for half a decade already, let’s give another story a chance. If it’s not the mother in law pestering the wife for a child, it’s the husband being in a cult that doesn’t let him have children, bas, fin, kwusi, o tito, e don do, enough! Having said that…. this is a barren woman’s story with a twist (lol)
-Originality: [2 out of 5] Well, this story is not exactly repetitive and then again it’s not exactly new. I’m certain it has aspects that has been seen before but (like the last two movies by Pascal) it has different aspects as well.
-Predictability: [4 out of 5] Like I mentioned earlier, this is my third Pascal Amanfo movie in a row and my theory on his movies so far is that there usually is some dramatic twist in the end. Bearing that in mind I tend to predict the most outrageous thing I can with his movies and wonder if they do happen or not. Now considering that my reviews are not only for those who have seen Pascal Amanfo movies, it would be unfair to judge predictability off of that. For this reason, I’m tempted to say the movie isn’t predictable. However, as soon as part 1 ended and the second part began, my prediction was set in stone and I was going to donate 1000 dollars to the first charity I see (lol). In the end my prediction did come to pass…. but (here’s a shocker) with a TWIST. You just can’t get it all with Mr. Amanfo it seems.
-Directing/Editing: [4 out of 5] Good. Thank you for two part movies.
-Acting Quality: [1 out of 5] I believe that most of the people in this movie could act however Luckie Lawson’s acting in the beginning was irritating bordering on extremely frustrating. It seemed like she was literally reciting the lines from the script… word-for-word. Yes! Her acting did eventually improve as regards dialogues. Her actions, however, were on point 100% of the time. Everyone else was on point, even Prince! (cough). Extras couldn’t act
-Settings and Costumes: [3 out of 5] Good
-Video and Audio Quality [2 out of 5] The overly saturated video quality was driving me mad in the beginning, but just like Luckie’s acting… you get used to it.
-Soundtrack [3 out of 5] Bernie Anti!
I am a Christian but in my heart, I loved the way this movie ended. I was cheering the girl on when it was going down. But God forgive me in Jesus’ Name, Amen! And He has done so. So let’s all move on. The acting was a bit stiff in most cases but that is my expectations of Ghana movies. (If you are from Ghana and don’t like what I said, ummmm… too bad. When you do well, you are praised if not, we will rain on your parade. Simple and short!). The best part of the movie was the end. My own two cents ooo…
