Caro The Shoemaker
Mercy Johnson, Ken Erics, Uche Odoputa
The movie tells the story of Caro, the aforementioned shoemaker who is just trying to live her life with her shoe shop and provide for her ungrateful sisters.
The movie has six parts
It took so long to finish this movie, over four weeks, with each part being released slowly. I stuck with it because this movie is nigh on fabulous. This is a perfect example of a story being so good that it transcends visuals and directing. Coupled with a brilliant cast, this has joined my top movies of 2014.
The movie tells the story of Caro, the aforementioned shoemaker who is just trying to live her life with her shoe shop and provide for her ungrateful sisters. It is fresh and interesting, and engages your attention. It doesn’t even show that it was a six parter because at no point do they engage in any extra delaying. The characters were funny, interesting and relatable. There is clear plot progression and the story starts immediately. They don’t waste time at all in this SIX parter film because every scene is relevant. It had me at the edge of my seat, simply brilliant.
Mercy Johnson brings it. She just brings it. What I loved is that she didn’t take over the film, she had a part and of course the film is named after her character but it paid equal amount of attention to other characters and fleshed out other characters. Ken Erics was just hilarious, his reactions to the things going on around him was perfect, laughed so hard. Chika Sugar Asoegwu was very good as well bar her accent, I couldn’t figure if that was her interpretation of what the character would sound like or her actually trying to do an American accent. All I know is that it was disgraceful. First time I have seen Nicole Banna but she certainly impressed. All in all the main actors were just delightful. The extras on the other hand were cringe worthy especially the ones at the party.
Now on to the directing. It was pretty clear that either this was someone that isn’t as used to directing because the scene changes were too fast and too abrupt. This only worked in this film because it was a six parter so they were able to cram a lot more into the film but if this had had only two parts it would have felt rushed. The credits go on for over five minutes and that annoying song plays over and over and over again. It drives one crazy. The soundtrack is actually inspired when they aren’t playing the ‘That’s why they call this love’ song and the score is good. After a while you even start to sing the song. Its visuals are so bad though. It would have been a much more pleasant viewing if this film had crisp and clear visuals.
In conclusion, it is pretty obvious that I would recommend this film ten times over. I put it there with ‘Pretty Liars’ in terms of complexity and entertainment value. It would be best watched as a serial though as opposed to a film. BTW Mercy Johnson’s lines had me cracking up.
