I went into this expecting some low level, low-effort rehash of an implausible story but what i got instead was an emotional and character driven story. Neither original nor new, this film took very different paths to a familiar end and I applaud it for that.
The story involves Tokunbo, a man pressured by his blind mother to marry however when his real fiancé cannot make it, he has to hire his best friend’s sister to play her part. It is original because it is entirely character driven, each character is given their just dues and that was what truly makes this an enjoyable watch. You become invested in their stories, in what they are going through and how it ends. And it gives a voice to a lot of characters that would have been side-lined or forgotten in such a storyline and has a refreshing take on the real fiancée. Normally she is portrayed as the bitch, downright evil for the sin of not being the main lead, but here she is sympathetic and her only crime is suggesting a stupid and naïve plan. The character of the mother stands out so well, you will tear up a little at her story. All in all, this was better than it had any right to be.
The acting was superb; Ini Edo has never stopped bringing it and will never stop. She had good chemistry with Joseph Benjamin and Keira Hewatch rounded it all off. Even the extras and supporting cast were good. I simply cannot fault it. A very big shout out to Gloria Young, her rendition of the mother was absolutely beautiful.
Production values were top-notch , crisp and clear visuals and good audio. The soundtrack was evocative and appropriate. On the hand, the makeup that they put on the mother was a special fail on its own. And the locations were so crapped up, barely any space to move at all.
In conclusion, I would recommend this movie with actual joy. It’s a funny little romcom with heart and very few flaws. Nollywood definitely needs more of this.
