Could have potentially been better
Stretched too long. Poor acting.
Many have tried and most have failed to recreate the classic nollywood movie “Disguise” starring Chioma Chukwuka and Emeka Ike. Undercover Lover is the latest in the series of ones that have failed and woefully so.
Undercover lover is the story of a poor young man, played by Alexx Ekubo, who continues to believe that there is a woman out there who will love him regardless of his poverty. This is all in spite of his exuberant roommate, played by Ifeanyi Kalu, who lives his life lying to women that he is wealthier than he actually is. Alexx’s character finally meets a young lady who claims to be the only daughter of a wealthy industrialist. He falls for her and then secrets are revealed. *SPOILER ALERT*
It turns out that the young lady is not really who she is and Alexx knows this because he is the industrialist’s only son.
We have seen many people trying to remake this movie over the years but this was definitely one of the harder versions to watch. This movie has an incredibly high rating on irokotv and after having watched it till the end, I cannot fathom it. Is it because you think the storyline is original? Please go and watch “Disguise” the come back and tell me how good you think the “Undercover Lover” storyline is?
One of the biggest downfalls of the movie is that it fails to engage. It is slow and it drags and there is really nothing in the movie to propel the viewer from scene one to the next. Then we get to the acting. This movie was rife with newcomers and a parade of actors who seemed to be getting their first ever acting lessons on the job. Alexx Ekubo might have tried to save the movie but there was not enough to uphold the movie.
There are a lot of unnecessary scenes plugged into the movie to make it even much harder to endure. The principal storyline, between Collins and Gina, took too long to arrive that by the time it does arrive no one cares and it cannot save the movie.
All in all, Undercover Lover would be one to avoid. I say, simply rewatch Disguise, if you must.
