Terror and Tears
Angela Okorie, Annie Macaulay, Browny Igboegwu, Chioma Chukwuka-Akpotha, Eucharia Anunobi, Junior Pope, Mike Ezuruonye, Sam Dede, Walter Anga
-Story: [2 out of 5] In the beginning of the movie I thought “What an amazing story, it could be spun in so many different directions…. I’m intrigued”…. 5 hours later … my twitter status was pleading another, here is what my twitter status said:
@NollywdReinvntdNollywood REinventedWTF!!! I did not just spend 5 hours watching this movie for this crappy ending… ***punches the wall***“
-Originality: [2 out of 5] Hmph let me see. Another story about political rivals like we used to have in the days of Pete Edochie, Ashley Nwosu (RIP) and Alex Usifo. Well not very original, but then again, this movie had a different spin off. The political rivalry was not unwarranted, but one can argue that the events in the movie were not very realistic and attuned to the sequence of things in the real world. After many a scene I caught my self going “What are the odds?”
-Predictability: [2 out of 5] I hate to give this movie points on not being predictable because in as much as it was not predictable, its diversion from the predictable train of thought was towards a ridiculous ending that just made me want to punch my screen. However, the points are for whether or not the movie was predictable, and it sure was not. Although I still get to shave off 2 points because in the beginning parts it was predictable, the boy got with the girl… and they lived happily ever after… boo hoo!
-Directing/Editing: [2 out of 5] As regards the directing and editing. I’d like to say that I tried. I tried to be a little easier and less harsh but it has almost become impossible for me to not find something. In this movie I just have two complaints, one question and one commentary. Ehen, so let us proceed ni. First complaint, I think it is absolutely annoying that whenever they are shooting a movie, a crowd forms around the set and these people in the crowd are captured as part of the movie. It does not look professional and it just draws the viewers attention out of the story and back to the realization that these folks are just acting. Second complaint, why is it that after Angela kills Pope’s wife, Pope resorts to calling Angela an “Ashawo, whore and a prostitute”, which if you ask me were very out of place. If someone killed someone dear to you, wouldn’t you be screaming things like… I don’t know, MURDERER? Oh well, now my question is where did the director or producer or props editor get the breast and penis that they used in this movie as cut-offs? (just curious). And finally my commentary, there were a couple scenes in this movie that I guess were supposed to be intense but due to the weak production skills (or what not) they came off as comical. There were scenes were the music could have been used to get the viewer to feel the emotions but yet the music was not used.
-Acting quality: [2 out of 5] If there was anything that pleased me about this movie, it was, beyond every reasonable doubt, seeing Aunty UK on TV (for all those who do not know who Aunty UK is, that is Eucharia Anunobi) along side Sam Dede. Since the movie Amnesty, I have been searching for this man and boy was I glad to see him again. His acting is just magnificent and so is Aunty UK, it’s reminiscent of old nollywood (which is the nollywood that started it all off for us). It is always important for us to remember where we came from as we look ahead to where we are going. With that said, I will now like to point out the people in this movie that made me want to bash my screen. Quite unusually, I have no query with Pope in this movie (maybe that’s cos he took his shirt off in the pool scene…lol) but most of my anger was brought about by Angela Okorie (viewed on left), there is something about my lady’s accent that did not sit well with me. There was a tonality of uhm… I don’t know… fake in her voice but her acting was definitely on point, disregarding the voice that is. Speaking of voice problems, I loved Annie Macaulay’s acting in the movie but when she opened her mouth to talk to Aunty UK in the beginning, I detected (cough, cough. I sound like one detective now) a slight degree of H-factor when she says “Your Honor”? Besides her, there were some other people in the movie who simply couldn’t act including the governor and his neck-less assistant.
-Setting and Costume: [1 out of 5] Sometimes, the only answer to a question on critic is, “I just wasn’t feeling it” and that was my feeling towards this movie in general. Right from the beginning, there was something (I couldn’t place my finger on it) that I just wasn’t feeling. I don’t know if it was Chioma’s K-leg, the raggedy look of Annie Macaulay’s gang or Mike’s tight shirts and weird pants or Eucharia’s tacky non-befitting house but whatever it was, the combination of the setting and costume in this movie did not start a fire within me…lol
-Video and Audio Quality [2 out of 5] In the beginning the video quality was not all that but in “Beast in the House” it was improved on but yet I plead for consistency. Not consistent BS, but consistent magnificence.
