-Story: [5 out of 5] So… I was watching this movie and I was watching this movie and all the while I’m thinking I really hope this movie is worth my $9 cos God knows I’ve been looking at the price for this movie since December 2011 (and this is April 2012). I know the movie has been hyped to the death but hey… these are the same Nigerians that thought Fazebook Babes was the best movie out of Nigeria this year (slaps head). Plus I’m igbo… money doesn’t grow on trees lol. No… but this was a good story. More than you expected.
-Originality: [5 out of 5] So… I started this movie and again (like I said earlier) I was watching it and all of a sudden… BOOM!… (please notice my sound effects, I put effort in this thing) it hit me. This movie reminds me of Koi… Mil Gaya which is a bollywood movie starring Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta about this special kid who is about 20 years old and still in elementary school because he has slow mental growth until an alien from outer planet comes and takes it all away and makes him smart and what not until the alien leaves and then it all goes back to normal, he is dumb again. At the end, I guess the alien has mercy on him and restores his powers on Hrithik from outer space. So… happy ending….. this movie had nothing to do with that. So why did I mention it? Cos I can lol (but you can see the relationship)
-Predictability: [5 out of 5] I was honestly getting bored in this movie I will not lie. Especially after I had established that it would end like “Koi… Mil Gaya” I was like, “happy ending! Bam, finally… something to take points off for cos I have never reviewed a 10 out of 10 movie before” and then Ramsey goes cra…cray…crazy… and Kunle Afolayan pulls a friggin Pascal Amanfo times a hundred on us all…. THAT’S HOW YOU MAKE A THRILLER. It might seem like somethings don’t tie up during the movie but just note them and wait till the end… and then it ends with “What do you believe?” I’m like, Kunle! Shey you want slap… which kain yeye question be that. Still a great movie
-Directing/Editing: [4 out of 5] Kunle was simply amazing in the entire thing. One thing I noticed that made me feel like such a genius for noticing it (even though I’m certain the entire world noticed it too… abeg don’t burst my bubble) was that *SPOILER* in the scene where they go to return the figurine, the setting and lines were almost mirrored from the scene when they had originally gotten the figurine. I’m like ha! You are so… amazing. Because that act alone means so much in that things are about to go back to how horrible they were before Araromire came in. However, the lack of a full grading on this for me was due to Junior’s death scene. It was not properly done is all I know… to state it simply, it wasn’t dramatic enough. I didn’t have enough time to be sad… I should blame it on the music though so see “Musical Score”
-Acting quality: [4 out of 5] I started this movie and it said, directed by… KUNLE AFOLAYAN. Produced by… KUNLE AFOLAYAN. Starring… KUNLE AFOLAYAN. I’m thinking “uh oh. There goes a potentially good movie” but then I rethought it and decided, eh… this is a Kunle Afolayan movie though so he can’t possible suck that bad and still let himself star in and potentially destroy his o so amazing movie. But boy o boy… Kunle wasn’t just good, he was astounding. (not to mention he’s easy on the eyes… abeg don’t murder me o lol). Nwoke’m is taking my breath away. Being able to direct, produce and then come and now act was something I previously regarded as impossible for any movie but hey! Kunle just defies all laws of nature it seems lol.Ramsey Noah baby! In the beginning I’m thinking “well, Ramsey is pretty darn boring in this movie” and then the end happens and I chewed my words. Omoni Oboli baby, loved her but she didn’t convince me with her crying and screaming scenes, sorry! Funlola as the comic relief. Amazing acting was never at one point over acting or underacting is what I loved the most about her performance. Tosin Sido as Ramsey’s sister, needs a little help but she is definitely better than Biola Ige. The best part of this movie is that Kunle did not permit any extra to speak at all before they ruined the movie. There own was simply “just stand there and look pretty”. Guest appearance by Jide Kosoko speaking of whom I have to say I love how he picks his roles nowadays and he is not doing that Olu Jacobs thing of I must be in every other movie out of Nollywood.
-Setting: [5 out of 5] Killed it. from 1901 (or something like that) to 2008 baby. From the village to the city to NYSC (can you say EFFORT!) to the beachside house. Amazing
-Costume/Make-Up: [5 out of 5] Well done especially Omoni’s brief traditional attire. Nicely done
-Props and Graphics: [5 out of 5] Amazing! Props to the person responsible for carving the figurine. Also props for the subs in that their size is not so huge that they take up a quarter of the screen I always hate those movies where you are forced to read the subs cos of their size even though you don’t need the subtitles.
-Video Quality: [5 out of 5] Great
-Audio Quality [5 out of 5] Great
-Soundtrack: [4.5 out of 5] All I have to say is… “Araromire!”
-Musical Score: [3.5 out of 5] Nicely done. Not forced or over done but there were definitely some scenes like Junior’s death scene where the musical score could have helped accentuate emotions.

NR, This movie deserves to be in your “great movies” list
Hey Maudrey, I’m just now noticing that it wasn’t. I will fix that right away. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
Kunle Afolayan! Nuff said. All I can say is that if there is a Nigerian filmmaker to be admired, he is one of the best, artistically and technically speaking. This movie in my view, represents the standard of filmmaking that Nollywood Filmmakers should aspire to. First off the story was very intriguing, as it was told through a hostorical lens. It dealt with the spirit world, but not in a way that was cliched or overdone. The production was flawless, and artistic, and the acting superb. I think all the actors conveyed their characters make up very well. I agree with the reviewer’s take on what happened to Ramsey’s character Femi, in that it was “Araromire” that drove him to insanity in his quest to get Mona. Contrary to what was commented earlier, I don’t think that Funlola’s character was over reacting, I think she was staying true to the type of female character she was supposed to portray. Great movie.
Superb movie
I love how the movie ended. Meanwhile Omoni was superb in this movie and funlolas character annoyed me so much. She likes over acting and making some faces that ridiculous. I don’t like her acting in both tinsel and this movie. Ramsey showed up again in this movie and kunle was just great. I love the unpredictability of this movie. I love love love.
To all lovers of The Figurine, here is the link that takes you behind the camera lens, you’ll appreciate the movie more trust me 🙂 . This is Behind the scenes of Araromire, sit back and enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6P2SbfcpbI
Ah yes oh I was confused about the waking up part too. Was it all a trick? or perhaps it was part of the director’s trick because after that it said “believe what you want to” or something to that effect.
no they didn’t wake up…..they were dead, just their eyes were open. it absolutely had nothing with the gods, ramsey planned everything and it went wrong for him too..
Aaaaah! I see. That was one heck of a confusing movie but very well done by Kunle Afolayan
Ramsey’s character Femi was the only one who was dead with his eyes open and sitting up. If you watch it again, you will see that Mona awakened while laying in the bed and saw him sitting there dead.
pls can someone explain their waking up…that part got me confused.
What waking up? It’s been a while since I saw the movie so do you mind telling me what scene this was or maybe what preceded this scene or what happened after they woke up?
im sure he/she is talking about the end…..by the bedside.
Oooh! Ok, I see
Boy, you sound confused
Hia *pops knuckles, ayaf been waiting for this moment. I believe that The possession of the figurine was what pushed Ramsey to do what he did. Even though he felt like he planned it all out, it was the evil spirits. after all, all the bad luck that happened to them he did not plan it.
The movie was a good one although when i got to the ending, i liked it but i felt as if it was supposed to be more. A more conclusive scene then following the word because am i supposed to believe they came back from the dead and if they did, what happened to Kunle? But then again, maybe this was the confusion he wanted us to have
