-Story: [3 out of 5] In the movie, “Gold Not Silver“, Tonto Dikeh was again married to Sam Dede and I remember whilst watching that movie, I kept thinking of the underlying similarities to this one when it eventually hit me that Tchidi is one of those directors who makes movies in pairs. What do I mean? At times, African movie makers make two different (usually two part movies) simultaneously and you can tell because most of these movies usually have the same cast or similar story lines. The thing about these movies is that usually one is much better than the other because there is more effort put into one than the other. Examples include Royal Madness & Stubborn Prince; Please Marry Me and Leave My Wife; Dumebi the dirty girl and Bachelors Heart; For the Promise and Gold Not Silver. Lest I deviate though, the story behind this movie…. could have been better
-Originality: [1 out of 5] The movie started off different, exploring a motif that not many African movies have explored before (read “my question” above for the motif). So, I started off this movie thinking it would follow that track, however it did not. It ended up going the usual juju route with a minor case of attempted husband theft (my consolation is in the fact that it wasn’t full blown juju-lites; you know the ones with the red cloth, feathers and calabash)
-Predictability: [0 out of 5] The end is a given
-Directing/Editing: [3 out of 5] No major faults. Tchidi did his work well
-Acting quality: [3 out of 5] Stand out performance for me? Well… considering that they were really only five people in this movie, I’d have to say Tonto and Sam together. They looked good together as a couple (I guess that’s why they went ahead to do other movies, like “Naked Ambition” together). The new girl, “Stephanie Ofokansi” was really good for a first timer. I mean, she is no Genevieve Nnaji… yet! But with practice, she might turn out to be really really good! (who I hear is an ex MBGN – hmm… is Nollywood going the Bollywood route of introducing beauty queens into the industry? See Lara Dutta, Priyanka Chopra and Aishwarya Rai! Maybe up next Agbani might do a movie… or two)
-Setting: [3 out of 5] Adequate
-Costume/Make-Up: [2 out of 5] I thought the costume and make up was generally well done, my only question arises from the fact that after Tonto Dikeh got mad, she still managed to some how have really clean clothes
-Props and Graphics: [3 out of 5] Ok
-Video Quality: [3 out of 5] Ok
-Audio Quality [3 out of 5] Ok
-Soundtrack: [3 out of 5] I really liked the soundtrack but it did tell the story (see end of post for lyrics)
-Musical Score: [4 out of 5] Never lacking!

Soundtrack “No Gain” Lyrics:
Temptation comes, with many beautiful things.
The devil takes…. more than he really gives.
He will promise you power.
He will promise to give you joy!
But the devil only comes, to steal and destroy!
So… Run!
Don’t take from the devil
Run!
Don’t give to the devil
Run!
No matter what you give or take, there is no gain, no gain.
No Gain! No Gain!!
He will Promise you pleasure
Only to give you pain
If you sell your soul to the devil…
